Any benefit to more frequent oil filter changes?

Was wondering if it would be beneficial to change the oil filter in between oil changes in addition to changing it when I change the oil?

i dont think there would be any aside from cleaner oil... 3000 mile oil & filter changes seem to work best

probably most beneficial to the filter company.

I'd say MB and most other auto manufactures spent a lot of time thinking about service intervals for their products.

Engineers spend all day thinking about this kinda stuff. Are you gonna out think them?

Yes, you could change your filter & oil much more often for a slight benefit...but you reach a point of diminishing returns...

I don't have the same faith as you do about the automotive engineers, but I do agree that more frequent oil filter changes (especially filter changes) are probably not going to increase engine life by much. That's because the oil that is circulated through the engine is not filtered to a particle size smaller than the tolerances inside the bearings. In other words, the grit left in the oil by the filter is large enough to cause bearing wear over time.

Replacing the oil will reduce the grit load far more effectively than changing the filter (well, unless you add grit with your new oil ).

So... how often on the oil? I don't think MB engineers of 20 years ago were given a parameter of making the engine only last so many miles, so the factory recommendations are probably sufficient for a long engine life. Long being defined as longer than it will take for some other part to wear and require an engine rebuild, during which any worn bearings can be replaced too.
