Hi, can older mercedes diesels with autmatic transmissions be tow started? http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/car/328004389.html

Thanks for the quick reply, do you just put it in neutral then shift into d? or do you start out in d????

edit: does it work in reverse also??

you start off in neutral and when you hit about 20 mph or so you drop it in low

I doubt it, don't you need a spark to ignite the gasoline?

Thats what the hook behind the bumper is for. A lot of MB's can be tow started. AFAIK all W126's, W124, W123, R107's can.

...in a 1984 300TD. You have to get the car going about 40 mph and then shift it into second. It makes a lot of smoke, but will start the car.

I mean hope you have a friend or neighbor built like a Sumo wrestler with the endurance of a marathon runner. Hey I think just described myself. I'm 6' 8 and 295 pounds with .0001% body fat and i can run a mile in 4 minutes and and a 40 yard dash in 4.3 seconds and I'm 46 years old. Others may disagree, however, particularly my daughter who calls me her old wrinkled shriveled dad, just a shadow of who he used to be.

If that is true, then why did my V-6 gasser Ford Ranger push-start (it was a standardshift)??

And why wouldn't U get a spark on a gasoline engine when roll starting? U are just cranking the engine with the transmission, drive shaft and axles instead of the starter motor.

Even if the battery was dead, roll starting it would turn the alternator fast enough to generate enough electric to make a spark. It would take a lot more generated electric to heat the GP in a diesel with a dead battery.

If the battery is dead, there will be no power to excite the alternator, so it cannot create electricity.

True that the gassers can be push/pull started with the rear-pump transmissions, but you do need electricity to make it happen. with the diesels, you just need the shutoff lever up. With the diesel also however, you need electricity to excite the alternator so that it will charge, so a little battery power will be necessary.

come on guys, maybe... maybe the Gasser's ignition system takes less amps to operate than it's starter system? by the way, will my w115 240d automatic do that pull start trick, that would be handy.

gasoline igniton uses miliamps to run a car... its all about voltage.

It's a little more than that, but unless the battery is completely shot, there is more than enough energy generated by the rotation of the engine being push-started to operate the sparks.
