Welcome to the Forum-

When I was 16 (now 18), I came across a low milage (88k) 1982 300D Turbodiesel. Got it for a steal for $1500. I knew my way around a car pretty well, and there wasnt much to do to get my new toy back in shape. However, I knew only good maintenence procedures for gasoline engines, and proventative maintnence for electrical systems. The diesel engine was new to me and automatic transmissions was something I swore I wasnt going to touch in fear of screwing something up. I became a member of this forum, and Learned so much from the other members. By reading some of the DIY-er articles, and other guide posts, I was able to fix my climate control, adjust the automatic transmission shifts, and some little tricks to get more power and what not. Ive personally never had or worked on a 126 but a 15+ electrical system, I can imagine would likely have some bugs in it..dont let it discourage you because the 126 was a very sucessful and safe chassis. I prefer the 123 chassis in the sense that they are scarce of electrical accessories that can be expensive to replace, simple to operate, are pleasent on the highway, nimble to handle through Brooklyn streets and squeeze into spots with. WVO adds more complication to your diesel experience, and if your not a DIY-er, than it will only be expensive troubles.
I hope I havent scared you off with my experiences, I hope the best for your buying decision, and motoring pleasure.

I find the up to 85, W126 just as spartan as the 300D. With the exception of the double firewall, there is little difference in complexity. Same engine and trans as the 300D, and in my oppinion one of the greatest Mercedes ever made. Super simple, with a good bit of refinement, and just a joy to drive compared to later W126s.. The later car feel like tanks compared to the 5 cyl SD.

If your drive is long, take the W126 (5 cyl turbodiesel). if shorter, the W123, its such a joy to drive also! It just feels so good...
