Parts storage
I've just returned from a very successful trip to the pull-a-part yard. Untold riches.
The parts lying around the garage are starting to pile up now. I was thinking of adding shelves but thought I'd throw a topic out there and see how others store their parts (for future needs). So how do ya'll store the treasure?

Big plastic tubs with see-through lids, mostly. (I forget what size they are, but I'm talking about the ones large enough to stuff a toddler or two in to. Not that I ever have!)They work great for smaller parts. Occasionally I find them on sale at places like Lowe's for $5 each, and stock up.

I've got a dozen milk crates and seven plant crates (similar in construction to milk crates but rectangular and hold twice as much-used for shipping live plants and bulbs) full of Scout parts that work well because they interlock when stacked, are very durable and with the slotted sides most everything is visible. Many nurseries give away the plant crates after receiving large shipments just to get rid of them. Milk crates generally need to be obtained in a more shady manner, all of which were from my college apartment days when most of our furniture was constructed with them.
My concern with shelves for all of my parts is just the sheer weight of most of the containers and the fact that I don't really have the space for those real heavy duty shelves. I just stack the crates in the corner or under my workbench and they're out of the way.

Gorilla shelving
Gorilla shelving works great from Sears -59.95 for 4x8 with 5 shelves. Sometimes they are on sale.
I keep the really heavy stuff like engines and heads on the bottom shelf and use rubbermaid tubs on the uppers. I thought about getting warehouse racks but have not been able to locate any that are 2ft deep so they won't take too much space.

I got a set of 9' tall warehouse racks. 4' deep! I got my 6KW generator under it, with an 27gallon astro van fuel tank... several engines, various parts etc... all my stuff store very well in my garage on these suckers! I have two 8' long sections on the wall. of course, I also have the loft above the office in the garage about 1200sq ft of space up there... then there is the three back stalls packed with whatever I happen to have in there at the moment, currently a model A, a 76 280Z, and a partially disassembled 67 firebird... then of course there is the 3 astro vans I have packed stuff into sitting in my yard. there is the three TD's and the two D's sitting in my yard, the 83 SD's trunk makes a nice storage area, two or three of the pickups in my yard have stuff stored in them... Hmm, I may have a problem...

I need to get a storage shed to free up a little garage room, but wherever they are stored they have to be sealed in containers. If not, the dirt daubers add a couple of pounds to their weight.....

I keep things like IPs, vacuum pumps, blower motors, stuff thats good, in plastic bags. Big things, bumpers, door panels, grills, engines, in the barn. You cant have enough spare parts but they gota be kept under cover not pilled up in the yard where the wife can see them

Lps V3
There is a product "LPS V3"....it can be purchased at Grainger, but I don't know where else.....
This stuff is sort of like cosmoline in a spray can.....for you youngsters, cosmoline is that waxy sort of stuff that old military stuff is coated with..... I use this to protect my treasures before I find someplace to stash them......this prevents me from finding a corroded mass of crap when I eventually do need that treasure..... SB

Wooden shelves in the basement. Constructed out of 2X4's and 3/4 ply, plenty strong enough.
