How far to adjust the

At the end of May I found an 84 300 SD with 87,000 miles. It had been sitting for about six years. Put some fuel in it, jumped the battery and it started right up. Most everything worked. A little rust here and there and of course, it couldn't get out of its own way on initial acceleration. So I took it home. This is what I have done so far.

As far as I can tell there is no blow by.

Replaced oil and oil filter
Replaced inline and spin on fuel filter
Cleaned in tank strain filter.
Replaced air filter.
Replaced power steering filter.
Replaced thermostat.
Removed EGR valve.
Capped vacuum input port on ARV
Removed associated EGR/ARV plumbing.
Cleaned manifold and ALDA banjo bolts.
Adjusted the valves.

The above seemed to have very little effect on the initial acceleration problem.

Adjusted throttle linkage. This had a noticeable improvement but still slow.
Tweaked the ALDA setting. It was like a totally different car.

Now the question. How far to adjust the ALDA. Right now there is no smoke what so ever. I get the impression that you should adjust the ALDA until ththere is smoke out the exhaust and then back it off. Or should I leave well enough alone and start in on the transmission.

I never pushed the ALDA on the SD to the point of smoke. It's very sprightly off the line and I don't see the need to find the point of smoke. She gets close to 30 mpg now..........beat 30 on the last tank..........so, what's the benefit?

If you're pleased with the performance from a standing start..........that's all that matters.

Personally, I'm not giving up any of the fuel economy in a valiant attempt to squeeze a bit of performance off the line.
