Today i had a safe and excellent opportunity to test what my 83 Turbodiesel could do.

0-50 18sec
0-60 21sec

The car seems to almost sprint to 50, then after that still in 3rd gear up to 75 or so it dosent seem quite as spirtied.

Has anyone else timed their D,CD,or TD?

sounds like your tubo has the blues, if you do a search you will find all sorts of niffty things about that high speed spinner and what can be done to get you down to that 12 to 14 sec. figure....

I have an '83 300D, 340,000 mi original (no rebuild). It does an honest 11.9 seconds 0 to 50 mph. Driver (me) and one passenger.

An original Road and Driver test article from 1983 gives time of 12.0 seconds for 0-60mph in a '83 300CD (turbo).

20+ on my 75 240D, top speed is about 80+mph. I always floor the padel at stop or traffic light.

About 8 seconds. Got a ticket a few weeks ago for doing 100 on Alligator Alley. Good thing I had slowed down

Not the Indy is it?

Greetings Jeepboy,

I have to ask first of all why you call yourself Jeepboy when you have a Benz? I've timed the ole beast a few times and I have to agree with you on the 0-50 time. It gets there a lot quicker then the 50-60 difference, but of course I am running without a turbo (natural air), so I'd be howling if I were you. Reasonable acceleration (not floorboarded or manually shifted) I've gotten from 0-50 in 13 seconds, but the last 10 miles takes another 8 secs. unless I just floor it from the get go on the entire run, then it's more like 17 seconds total to 60MPH. This is on a 1978 300D engine. Naturally, if you bypass the second gear start and manually shift everything yourself you can save a second or two off your time if you're not driving into the wind. I have often wondered it there wasn't a way to get fuel into the cylinder quicker to aid faster start offs, but without suppling anymore additional air to the cylinder, I'd just be spitting diesel out the tailpipe trying to get there wouldn't I?

Charles

Acceleration is sure a funny thing . I installed a mildly modified 454 Chevy engine in a 2wd Chevy Blazer, it is used
mainly as a work truck to pull a heavy trailer, but truth be told it is also a toy as I'm doing a lot of work in getting the body extra straight before I paint it and am building an aluminum dash etc.. I have the top off and bumpers removed so it is quiet light. Could not resist a little spin in it the other day. As we live in a remote rural area with very little traffic (maybe a car every half hour on our road) I did a couple of impromptu quarter mile runs.
Dejavu sixties ,complete with smoking tires , sounds of the hood being sucked into the Edelbrock carb as the secondaries open. gas gauge moving at about the same rate as the heat gauge but in opposite directions.
An hour later I take my 81 SD to the post office and accelerate on the same stretch of road . Perhaps having reached my sixth decade has changed me somehow ,but the smooth push of those five cylinders and the turbo coming on as the tach climbs is far more satisfying than my fish tailing Blazer. Perhaps I'll take old smokie Pearl my 240 D up on the gravel tomorrow where theres only one car every four hours.
