I'm still looking for a third car for my son. I found an '84 190D that's supposed to be restored except one of the cylnders is has a problem. The seller says it needs to be re-bored or the block replaced.

I'm guessing a used engine is around $2K installed. What cost would be involved with re-boring? I'm pretty good at DIY stuff, especially if I have a manual. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

Excuse me, but aren't all Diesel engines sleeved? There would be no reboring, just resleeving. Not that sleeving is a trivial process anyway - just ask Larry about his daughter's car.

I'd be much more concerned about you buying a very early 201 chassis. They were not exactly the height of Mercedes quality.

You'd be much better of with an early eighties 123 chassis diesel. In fact there is a 1983 240D manual on eBay right now. There are plenty of them out there.

Good Idea! I already own an '85 123 and it's great.

Very few of the diesel engines in small and medium size cars and trucks are originally sleeved. Most are so called "parent bore", which is just a fancy way of saying conventional unsleeved construction. Wet sleeved engines tend to be rather too heavy and expensive for light automotive applications. Just about any engine gas or diesel can have sleeves fitted by a rebuilder if the engine is too worn or has a damaged bore that can't be cleaned up by reboring.
