High Altitude Performance

Has anyone noticed that their off-the-line performance suffers at high altitudes (above 6,000')? Do you consider that normal?

Andrew

Yes it is normal to lose some off the line power. Think about it.... you are idling at 7000ft at zero boost. The air density is less than say at sea level. It takes the turbo to spool up to provide you with boost. Just because you are turbocharged doesn't mean that you won't lose ANY power at altitude.

My 2001 Dodge-Cummins powered loses some power when I take it to Lake Tahoe, Calif. It is 6,000ft above sea level. I also notice my truck was doggier on take off, smokes more AND under wide open throttle, I couldn't build as much boost PSI as I could in Sacramento. I could see up to 36psi boost at sea level. At 6,000, I could only get about 29psi.

Sea level is about 14.7psi

6000' is about 12psi.

Does that cause the turbo to spool later in the rpm range as well?

Yes, it has to spin faster to make the same pressure.

Yes, on a recent road trip I noticed that I was even more sluggish than usual off the line at altitude. But once rolling and fully spooled up on boost, my W210 diesel was awesome to drive in the mountains. At elevations about 10,000 feet I was blowing past large V8-powered cars and SUVs with no difficulty at all, and getting about 28mpg while doing it. That was probably the most fun I've had in this car yet!

Cheers, John

Last time I was up on Stevens Pass at 5,000 feet, I noticed a slight power drop. I don't have a boost gauge installed, so I don't have any numbers, but boy was the turbo screaming pulling up the final climb to the summit compared to sea level.

That's about all I noticed on that climb too, as I was too busy watching my temp gauge climb due to an undiagnosed cooling system problem
