How to Remove Cruise Control Amp?
My Cruise Control is decidedly non-functional, and I was hoping to start fixing that as my next project.
I found where the CC amp is located, under the kick panel on the driver's side, silver box screwed in real good but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it out. It seems to be screwed on in two places, one that I can't reach by any means. Would it be more reasonable just to buy a new amp, and leave it hanging next to where the old one used to be? (I'd still have to test the actuator, obviously.) If not, how do I get the current one out? |

Is this on the 1955 Buick that you have?

It's helpful if you put the vehicle in your signature..........as many of us have done.

i remember having a hard time with it too... I think either a really short phillips head, or a 90* phillips head. When I put the new one in.. I just did the one easy screw

The amp is held to a bracket with two screws. The bracket is screwed into a support under the kick panel. Don't try to remove the screws that hold the amp to the bracket. They are too tight, and access is poor.
Remove the screws that hold the bracket to the support. They come out easily. Remove the amp and bracket as an assembly.

The bracket should be only held on by one 10 mm nut.

Actually it's a 10 mm bolt. The "nut" is actually part of the bracket an does not move. You need to access the bolt from the "steering column side" of the bracket. Try using a 10 mm deep socket, it's not too bad once you get the correct angle.

When I took mine out, I just bent the tabs back on the silver box while it was still in place and pulled the circuit board out. Much easier.

Lay on your back with your lower body hanging outside the door upside down under the steering column with a headlamp and offset phillips, all the while swatting at the mesquitos and moths and june bugs and knats that find that lamp at 10:00pm interesting. Ignore the muscle cramps and twitches. The amp will come out.

Right! I had it mixed up. It's been a few years since I pulled one out.

cruise control amp 560SEL 1991 MB
Have spent the better part of the day trying to locate the cc amp on this vehicle. MB dealer sent me a template showing it somewhat centered, vertical mount (to what is unclear), appears near the firewall. Well, it isn't there in my vehicle. My question is simple,...should mine be located same as those models discussed on this thread? Opening up the area under the steering column is difficult, and I don't want to do that unless I am assured my model is like those discussed here of the mid 80's 300 series.
Thanks..... ![]() |
