transmission will not shift above 2nd

83 300d euro

will not shift above 2nd gear. the vac modulator was replaced. there is 10 hg of vac at the line going to the transmission at idle. when accelerating the throttle the vac goes up as opposed to going to 0. i read that this is due to the vac control valve not bleeding off correctly or either poor 3/2 valve. the system is very simple minus egr. 2 vac lines from vcv go to one side of the 3/2 valve and the 3rd line goes to the transmission.

with the vac line pulled from the transmission it does the same thing. it will shift from 1st to 2nd fairly quick and smoothly. should the trans still go through all the gears even with the vac line disconnected?

Matt

you don't want to hear this but I had the same problem (not going past 2nd) and chased the vacum all over the place and found nothing, I wound up getting a rebuilt intalled at Aamaco for 3K and just moved on down the road. Ok I should add that the car was free to me so I figured this was what the cost of the car was gunna be to me.

i will be swapping vac modulators and tightening all bolts. if this does not increase the pressure then i'm swapping another trans that has the bowden cable assembly which i do not currently have. so i'll need to find all the necessary bowden cable accessories.

we can only hope thats not the case hofler

Your problem doesn't seem vac related (valve body), but if you are convinced it is, have you tried simply disconnecting the vac supply to it? It will make for hard shifts, but, while in the raw, your transmission will shift if it's a vac problem. That should narrow it down to whether or not it actually IS a vac issue.

russian vin check matches same trans number as what is on the trans. so maybe euro 300d for this year had no bowden cable. has anyone here switched from no bowden to a bowden cable setup? and also has anyone rebuilt their trans by themselves. can you give me a estimate of difficulty, time, and money involved?

Thanks everyone
