Intermittant wiper delay time setting
I have an issue with my 85 wagon. My wiper delay time is about 1 second, which might as well just be on the low setting. My 2 1980 240's have about a 4-5 second delay, which is almost perfect.
In searching, it appears there may me a wiper relay that controls delay. Here is where I got that info: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=145657 http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=203782 Where is this wiper relay, if in fact that is what controls it, and can it be swapped out with an earlier year that might have a longer delay? Thanks all.......

My '85 should be electrically identical to yours (except for the Calif. smog stuff) and the wiper delay is several seconds, so yours must be defective. The delay relay is behind the instrument cluster, about where the oil pressure gauge is, according to the (CD-ROM version) FSM. I would guess that all W123 cars (and maybe more) had the same delay relay so you could get a used one from a junkyard or used parts supplier. Looks like the part number is 000 821 08 63, $36 from ******** Arizona. I can't find the part in the EPC.

Excellent. I crossed checked it to an '81 240D and that gave the same part #, so maybe it will be Scar to the rescue again.
Thanks Jeremy.

Jimmy, did you fix this with a new relay? Is your old non-working relay for sale?

I haven't messed with it yet. Still have to find the relay from Scar. I had already removed it, and now I have to figure out where I put it....

I"M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!
I feel so much more sane now, knowing that I'm not the only one who dissasembled a car or two, and can't find all of the parts. Thanks Jimmy!

Please let me know if you're willing to sell the old, dead one. I have a circuit and some software code that implements an infinitely variable 0-30 second wiper delay. I need an old relay to figure out how much room I have to play with for packaging.

I guess I'll head out to the garage. Things need to be moved around from time to time anyway...... **edit** Does anybody know how to search the EPC by part number? I want to enter the relay # and find the location. {i have other relays that I want to find out where they go}

I have only been able to search by group. The relays are in the group "Fusebox and Relays" (if I remember correctly). There are a bunch on the left front fender, a bunch behind the cluster, and one (emergency flasher) under the center console wood.
**edit** Group: Electrical equipment and Instruments Subgroup: Fusebox and Relay **/edit** Which one(s) are you looking for?

At the top of the EPC net page is a search tab, or hit F11. Enter the part number and see what you get. It will list all the cars that have that part number.
You can then click on the car model and it will pull up the diagram. But for the car it is not descriptive as to where it is. On a 123.123 it is on page, 54 electrical equipment and instruments, then 045 fusebox and relay. Item number 47. But I don't know if the diagram is helpful for finding it in the car. Second to find item in the car. Your "interval wiper control". Go to the service manual. Open it to the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual. Then open the "Wiring Diagram" section. At the bottom of the page is a blue tab called "Component Locations" Click on the tab and open the PDF file. Scroll down to page 206 and under "interval wipe control" it shows it is located "behind LH side of instrument cluster" page 202-1 (figure 1 ) This is how you locate the components for your particular model that you selected from the CD. OK, that search function works really well like that. Awesome!
One question: is there a "back" function after you get to the end of the search? I enter part #, it has me select group (ie: American mkt, then chassis, then the pic) I wanted to go "back" and select another chassis (from 240D to 300D) and couldn't locate a "back" function. No big deal to start search over, you just have to re-enter part #, yada yada......

I finally replaced the wiper relay and I now have a near 5 second delay, up from about a 1/2 second. Now if the wagon just didn't leak when it rained....

I'm waiting for Bob to develop a variable timer circuit so that we can have adjustable delay time.............

That would be cool. I installed the wiper relay from a 91-97 Passat in my 86 Jetta and it allowed varying the delay from 1.5 sec to 22, compared to the original 7 second-only. Simple relay swap.
