help with my '84 300sd

I am the original owner of a 300SD, 1984. Lately, on the highway after cruising fine at 75-80 mph for several miles, my power starts to slow and i cannot get above 70. then an hour later, it slows to 45-50.
Sure makes all the other travelers angry. after stopping and restarting, it does fine for a few minutes and then starts to regress all over again.
Any thoughts on what this could be?
I am female and in a new city and am afraid of getting taken at the mechanic.
thanks

Most likely diesel filters in engine compartment. There are 2 on drivers side. One is at an angle, this is prefilter, the other one looks like an oil filter, but has bolt in center to hold it in place. I'd change both, and happy motoring. Welcome to group. Good luck.

Never tell somebody that on Christmas!

Yeah it could be bad too but easiest to do easiest filters first.

I agree, sounds like a fuel problem. My hand in the pic is holding the primary filter, the black thing is the secondary filter, it screws on, just like an oil filter on gassers. You'll need to loosen that large bolt on top, 22mm, or maybe you can get an adjustable wrench on it, don't need a lot of torque.
Local auto part stores should have both of them.
If you change out the filters, you'll need to prime the system with the pump located on the engine. I have the new black pumps installed, yours may be white with a knurled handle, unscrew that, pump, re-tighten when done. Also fill up the secondary filter with fuel of some sort, injector cleaner will work just fine, at the local store also. Loosen the smaller of the two bolts on top of the fuel filter housing, a 17mm, I think, when pumping the primer, this lets the air escape, tighten back down after fuel comes out.

When you remove the fuel cap do tou get a sound of vacumed air (whooosh)? If you do clean the tank vent line under the driver's side wheel well. If not then do the filters and check back as there are some other things that could be done like banjo fittings etc. Good luck.

Geez Roy, now that the poor woman with one post has her head spinning, can we again remind her to do the most simple, AND most common cause of this issue, and replace her primary and secondary fuel filters. All this other stuff listed in numerous posts above can be done next......

The filters are probably your problem. If you are willing to get your hands dirty and have some basic tools, this is a 10 minute job.

If you take it to a shop. You should spend maybe $30 on filters and 1/2 hour labor.

I agree, the filters are the most common cause of this issue.

this sounds like the primary filter, because when you stop for a while, it returns to normal.
however, it could also be the fuel tank itself. simple thing to do is get a flashlight and look at the fuel filter closest to the firewall of the car. it should be transparent and you should be able to see the element, it is supposed to be white, so if there is a lot of blackish gunk on it, you should be able to see it clearly. if there is only a little bit of gunk on the clear filter element, just move to the fuel tank cap. after a long drive, immediately go take the fuel cap off, and see if you hear a whoosh of air entering the tank.
if you do, there is a bell shaped device above your passanger's rear tire, clean it off, it may have gotten covered with mud recently. this can actually collapse your fuel tank making it so it only holds 10 or so gallons instead of the normal 20 ish gallons.
