617 injectors

Can worn out injectors cause the engine to become more noisy than usual?
Engine starting to make a metallic sound or a nailing sound, sometimes worse than others.
currently at 180,000 with original injectors>

worn injector(s) [Noise?]

Yes,

EDIT:If you're using the "WONDERFUL" USLD diesel;there is a possibility
that your fuel "JOBBER" has not added enough additive to make up for
the lack of lubricity in the new 15ppm fuel.(Saves Him/Her a ton of
money.) As little as a quart of Peanut/Safflower/Vegetable/Etc. oil
will make a difference.Or you could use one of the commercial
additives:Redline/FPPF/Power Service/Etc.

EDIT:Your valves are in correct adjustment??? (every 10 to 15 K miles)

Try loosening the capnuts on top of each injector one at a time to try and
locate the source.(use rags around the testing injector it will seep diesel
when the capnut is loose)
What you are doing here is taking the injector being tested offline to see if
the noise goes away.
Then the classic next is to move the noisy injector(s) to another cylinder
to see if the noise follows.

Or you could try a diesel purge first.(lubro moly product ,Diesel Purge)
You would put both the intake fuel line (from the supply pump on the
side of the Injection Pump) and the return fuel line (from the return hose
on the fitting on top of the fuel filter) into a clean container full of
diesel purge and use this to run the engine (according to instructions).

With 180,000 miles on the injectors it might be a good idea to at least have them tested. My guess would be that the injector nozzles are worn out and for sure that the nozzle opening pressures are lower than they should be.
Do a search on the term "nailing" and get some info from other threads.

When I replaced my nozzles a few months ago I found the old ones to be rusted/pitted/and the needle valve inside was so worn/loose that they fell right out when I removed the nozzle from the injector body! Not good....no wonder I had no power/smoke! With new bosio nozzles in, a world of difference. I always add some PowerService to my fillups....probably about 7-10oz per fillup....just to boost the cetane a little and help the lubricity.

Injectors should be cleaned and pop tested/replaced every 100k or so. Have them rebuilt with german made parts. The stuff made in India has a reputation around here.

Sorry for the related threadjack...
I'll be replacing my injectors as well, but wanted to take them to the "local" Bosch shop for spray and pop tests. I was debating whether to buy some old injectors (anyone have a set of 5?) to rebuild then swap with mine after testing, or to buy some reman Bosch units (knowing I would be replacing them shortly).

It has a reputation as scrap metal in Germany.

o.o 180k on origonal injectors.. are you kidding? i had a 616 engine that knocked so bad on one cylinder you swore that somone was hitting it with a ball peen hammer. i took the head off and found out that it wasnt burning the fuel at all, all because of a bad injector. i suggest you replace your injectors, couldnt be more than 200$ and it will run like new. ( Get better gas milage too)

Awesome, you will be very satisfied with them. We've had them in both of our SD's for many many thousands of miles. (probably 15-17k between the two of them) with great results.

The Bosch Rebuilds are some where in the $40 range (and you need to pay the core charge) if you search internet auto parts places. But, you will not know if you are getting the German Bosch nozzles or some other countries. You might want to look at this thread:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=207859

I am waiting to buy some Monark injector nozzles form member C Sean Watts. He will be recieving a shipment of them soon. The price is good and you will know what you are getting. Contact him for the details if you are interested.
Ounce you get the nozzles you can have them rebuilt at you local fuel injection shop. You could also go to the junk yard and get that other set of 5 that you were talking about for use as cores to be rebuilt with your own nozzles.

Hi 911 and any others...

They're in - held in customs for two weeks.

I now have nozzles, springs, heat shields, pressure shims and a very small number of OM617 injectors ready to install. Also, a few nozzles and heat shields for VW 1.6L.

Insured USPS shipping starts at $8.00 (I don't charge "fleabay" inflated shipping)

Have the new nozzles pop tested for spray pattern before installing.
I have been getting reports on full sets of new BOSIO nozzles with seriously defective spray patterns.

Have a great day.
