Tach doesn't work on my 201 190d....

The tachometer on my '86 190d 2.5 5spd didn't work when I got the car a few weeks ago (for $1,800

). I switched out the entire gauge cluster with a new one, but still no tach. Who knows what the sender looks like and where to find it? Any quick fixes to try before I start looking for a new one?
