i dont think thats the right item I'm speaking about. It's a long black thing. It looks like a shock absorber.

From memory I would say on the driver's side mid engine ... there are threads about it in the archives... I may have posted a pic of it... only one trans configuration (manual or auto) had them... but if you had the proper one it could also be retrofitted... according to the 616 FSM...

So, is this the engine dampener or what is this?

240D's don't have them. At least mine didn't. Only the 300D's.

Yes, but as mentioned, and I think pj... is right, there aren't any on a 240.

Quick question, slightly OT: Can you change the engine shocks/dampers (on a 300D) without having to lift up the engine? I already changed the engine mounts but did not realize the dampers had to be changed also (forgot).
Thanks!

Hmm, well this is a pic from my 83 240d. Mine, too, has started to develop vibrations while sitting still in gear on the brakes. Re-did the valves yesterday. Helped a bit. Motor mounts look pristine. I was going to change them out, however tried jacking the motor up to see if they move at all or see if there was any visible signs of cracking, etc. They look perfect. Must've been changed by PO.
Is this part here in the picture what I should investigate next? Thanks |

Ok, so whats the difference between the dampener and shock, if any? Could the shock be bad and cause my engine vibration?

ANSWER: Engine vibration DAMPER = engine shock.. DAMPER = (Engineering / Mechanical Engineering) a device to reduce electronic, mechanical, acoustic or aerodynamic oscillations in a system 98% of the time the issue is a BAD shock mount, lower and/or upper... QUESTION: Could the shock be bad and cause my engine vibration? ANSWER: The question as phrased allows only one answer; Impossible, the shock and shock mounts are there to control/reduce engine vibration = they do not generate anything. The answer you wanted is: Removing, damaging the shock and/or shock mounts will allow the engine MAXIMUM oscillation/vibration.. |
