trans fluid

I'm going to change my fluid and filter this weekend on my 82 300SD any idea on how much fluid it takes and the best type to use?

not sure how much...

I'm not sure how much yours takes, but mine used about 7 quarts of fluid. Mobil 1 was my choice, was in there before for 100k miles and came out super clean. I renewed with the same and in another 100k mi I'll report back with results. So far this tranny has 245k mi on it with no rebuild and she still very strong.

Amsoil I believe also makes a good synthetic trans fluid.

not sure about the sd

Not sure about the SD change, but how are you going to change it.

Spill and fill..... won't get all of the capacity...

SPill and fill and torque converter drain...

Pump?

I did the spill and fill less than a year ago, and going to due it again because I know i didn't get all of the old fluid out (obviously)

I would add one quart of Trans-X before you quit driving it around... let it dissolve varnish in the trans valve body...that way it can exit when you take out the old fluid and put in new filter...

As long as practical...if you planned on changing it out the next day...then that day... but if you are going to do it in a month... leave it in there till you change it out... and the same advice about changing it hot applies to this as to engine oil....

That should be a great interval....
If you had complained of shifting problems I would have suggested two cans... I think on my 81 TD to get the suggested first time flush strength it took two...
Then I just put one in when I put the new fluid in...

I am not sure why you put the ' oopps' on your post..
Did you mean that you did not change out the filter at the same time you changed the fluid ?

I think it was 7.1 quarts for a total change in a Federal version.

Have you looked into Amsoil trans fluid? I've had it in all my cars and trucks and it's great stuff.
