Vacuum problem..
Greetings!
I have a bit of a problem and thought I'd see if someone here could help. When I shut off the engine by turning the ignition key to the zero position and even taking the key out, the motor is still running and I have to use the manual shut off switch. This is something to new to me and I'd appreciate any help for the experts here. My Mercedes is a '82 300TD Station Wagon. Thank you and happy holidays to all. |

welcome to the forum.....it's a great place and all the answers are here.
Forgive me for not writing an detailed answer.....but try searching first as this has been posted/resolved many times. Could be a vac leak somewhere in your system (do your door locks work or tranny shift hard?)....or it could be a bad shutoff valve. Best thing you can do is buy a Mitivac at an autoparts store (if you plan to maintain these beasts yourself). Here's a good writeup on diesel giants site too on the shut-off valve (back of your IP). http://www.dieselgiant.com/repairyourshutoffvalve.htm

Simplest solution. Pull off vacuum line from shut off switch. Substitute a 3' length of vacuum hose running out thru the cowling and protruding from the hood about 1' in the vicinity of wipers. Two quick sucks will shut down your engine without having to open the hood.
Don't let Eliot Spitzer see you doing it.

I recently installed a new one on the SD, I got that plastic thing, VCV, out of the way, did not remove the ALDA. There is a metal spacer, I used some gasket stuff out of tube just to hold the three pieces, two paper gaskets sandwiching the metal piece, while I installed. I also used a stubby ratcheting wrench.
I started the engine with the valve removed, by mistake, and used the shut off lever to stop the engine, I did not have a run away. I used a mity-vac on the valve, it worked, but had oil dripping out of the ignition cylinder, so I replaced.

There is also a small vacuum shut off valve attached to the ignition lock cylinder. Best way to access is to lower the steering column. If this valve wears out, your car will fail to shut off as well with the key.

Thank you for the replies and feedback, everyone!
It's a complicated problem but hopefully with the advice you've given me I'll be able to sort it out. I have one more question for you, and figured I wouldn't start a new thread for it so I don't bug anyone. The problem is that the kick down cable is frozen, and I wish to replace it. I looked below the engine and my impression is that it's connected into the transmission housing, so my conclusion is that I have to open and of course replace the transmission filter/gasket and do the connection. Is my observation correct or not? And does anyone know how the cable is connected at the top, on the engine side? Thank you kindly for any and all ideas. |
