Changing an OM602 to all mechanical controls...

A while back I remember someone talking about removing the electronic controls from a 2.5 Turbodiesel engine. I'm on the verge of starting another W201 / 2.5Turbo / 5-speed project, and I'm wondering how simple I can make one of these engines. (i.e. what is required to get it to start, run, and shut off) I would like to minimize the electrical connections and controls.

My ultimate dream is to build a land-speed-record type of 190DT from this project. This would mean a big turbo, tweaked injection pump, water to air intercooler, and a minimum of other features (no a/c, no cruise control, no climate controls, etc.)

I'm thinking that only the starter, alternator, and IP shutoff (vacuum source) are actually essential to the operation of this engine.

Any input would be appreciated on what exactly is necessary for the engine to function, versus what is included in the factory installation.

SteveM.

If it's an '87 602, the only electronics is the idle control, and it can be eliminated by using the stop on the linkage if compensation for A/C etc. is not desired.

Yep. The electronic control on the '87 602 is essentially the same as that on the 87 300D. I believe 1990 was the first year of electronic control of boost, etc.

Thanks.

Thanks guys. How about the 3 or 4 prong plug (not looking at it right now) that attaches to the airbox right behind the passenger's side headlight.

There is 1 connection on the back of the IP, and then another 3 prong connector on top of the IP. Can these both be disregarded? Are they both related to the ERL?
