If there is one thing you would fix on your W123 300D, you would .....

I spent all winter replacing every gasket on my engine's oil system and transmission, including the waffle gasket on the oil tower and now I haven't had a leak or a drop for the last three months!!!!

Now ,I would rebuild my entire vacuum hose system from the pump to the back of the car, because its only good for 2 or 3 key cycles or at most a day or two before the vacuum leaks out. I have a strong belief that most vacuum leaks are in the engine compartment....

Finally, the other thing I would do is lift the dash and find my leaking diaphragm...I think the major vacuum hose that connects to climate control in your engine compartment--the green line-- is supposed to hold a vacuum and mine doesnt, and I capped it. Because of that, my HVAC system is stuck at defrost.

Then I would be happy!

But if I found the time.... I would rip up the floor insulation because after a while it holds moisture and promotes rust.

For giggles I would rebuild the AC head to toe with new hoses and orings recharge the AC per Diesel Gaint specs and flush it so that it was even colder than a 1985 fresh off the floor. Mine just has too much oil in it which is messing up the freon effieciency but it sure the hell does promote compressor life. Mine is cold but I want it to be super Cold!!!

The last thing is I want the cruise control working perfectly. I need a new switch. Thats it!

On the other, if I had nothing to do, I would probably steam clean the engine.

The last thing I would do is repaint the passenger side door because thats the only one where it doesnt look showrrom sharp.

Thats about it.

Oh yeah if I found the time I would raise the car on jackstands and detail the undercarriage and clean all the surfaces with a pressure washer so that the car when on a Lift would awe people.

Then i would be finally done.

Of course that doesnt include my plan to rip out that annoying Sony stereo and put in a Blaupunkt circa 1985 for true authenticity.

Then I would be really happy.

But if I did the Blaupunkt, I would open up my Hirschmann and rebuild that and clean it.......

But you know I sure good use a good wax job....

I wouldn't waste the time. I just remembered I never did find a replacement bulb for the center console light and I am using a jury rig to light it up until I find the right one. Thats just a small point because i just remembered i promised myself to rebuild my spare steering gear box right down to the Gears!!

Not too mention that I need Brake Dust covers for the rear tires also. ( Ihave them on the fronts!) They make my powder coated tires look fabulous.

Well that should do it.....

he heh except that I found two brand new rubber pucks for my drive shaft for free at a Yard and I want to put them in, no rush, just as longs as I get them done next weekend.....

One thing I would fix on the Squash is the drivers side trunk wheel well hole! Now I know why it had a new rear windshield seal when I bought it.........
I just don't know how to do that type of work AT ALL.

On China it would be the 3rd gear syncro.

On the wagon it was the windshield seal, and I did that a couple weeks ago.

Hey Richard, I just re-read your post. I thought the title was ONE thing I would do....

The one thing I would fix is the cruise control that works but doesn`t work only when it wants to. Find the Gremlin that suddenly shuts it off or slams the peddle down when Iam cruising at 65 or so up to 80 mph .

Replace the drivers seat spring bottom to fix the 30Deg list to Port, or pad my wallet with more money and keep it in my left pocket so I can drive upright.

Install the rear seat head rest I got last summer out of a Euro 123. Just need to find some black covers for them.

Glue the vinal around the front dome light again, maybe use hot glue this time.

Install the hood with the one I painted a year ago to replace the one that is tweaked slightly from a fender bender before I bought the car 11 yrs ago. also the new hood pad.

Tomarrow get the sunroof aligned so it shuts with the manual change over from the cable drive that I ripped out last night. no more electric.

In stall the AL129X Alternator I got at PNP out of a Saab today.

And finally The one thing I want to do on my 123 is finish up on the valve cover that I have been grinding sanding and polishing on for the past 2 months.

And the GTG is in 3 days .

Oh and I still need to bolt on the grill badges, and ......

Charlie ☺

New half shafts for all my cars, got my gold 300d a set and what a difference .Had been putting this oiley job off for awhile but finally had some spare time to get at it last week.Really a straight forward job ,no surprises just a big mess. The next car to get the treatment is blue max ,a little coupe that just needed some attention. The cars I usually pick up seem to be on their last owner before they hit the yard .It makes my happy to see some of the cars Ive sold in the past 3 years still driving around ,we need to keep some of these old mbs around for awhile .Maybe in the year 2020 the youth of tommorrow will recognize these 300s as the muscle cars of the sixties."HEY ,NICE BUNTS"

The next "big" repair will be to toss in a reman engine at some point (probably within 100-150K miles). Everything else is just a nit that gets done when I feel like spending a little time/effort (i.e., time to take out the blower motor and lube the bearings, again).
