fuel filter change

Ok I'm about to replace my two fuel filters...Someone told my to do the primary first and then prime the secondry filter with tran fluid and do tha second to bypass pumping. Sound good? How should I prime that secondary filter? Thanks

There's a long white cylindrical "handle" near the IP. If you unscrew the handle, you can pump it in and out; this is the fuel system primer pump. 100 or so pumps should prime an empty secondary filter - you should hear an audible change in the pumping action when it's primed.

Just fill it to the top with diesel and screw it on. When you pump, crack the nut on top of the spin on filter and tighten when no more bubbles ooze out.

Got canola oil (veggie oil) in your kitchen?
You can use that too.

Use the ATF, it'll work fine.

Ok so I put the two in. Poured some of the diesel from the old secondary into the new one. Tried to start it and nothing. I pumped maybe 30 times until it seemed fuel wanted to come out of the pump itself. I spilled some fuel here and there is that ok or should I wait for it to evaporate before strating it. The first time I tried starting it I saw some white smoke which I'm guessing was the fuel I spilled. Obviously I'm paranoid....Thanks

I'm about to drain the oil too. Where are good jack points under the car?

the white smoke is probably the ATF burning (if you used any). the diesel wont evaporate, and you dont need to worry about the fumes exploding, that only happens with gas. the little pump only primes the IP, the filter has to be filled manually. i have a self-priming IP so i dont know how many pumps it takes, but it sounds like it takes at least 100 or so.

there should be a little round rubber nub about 1 inch in diameter about 6 inches behind the front wheels and 6 inches in front of the rear wheels (at least there are on the 124) these are the jack points for a floor jack. there are separate holes for the spare jack that came with the car, but i dont think i would use that jack to get under the car, i dont trust it that much!

good luck

Get some ramps much safer!

I have never jacked up a MB and put it on stands. I think it can be done, just don't put any weight on the rocker panels. I usually only jack up full frame vehicles like the Jeep

So after I got the new filters in the car was idling MUCH better. Drove her up and down the driveway here and after 4 trips it still wants to start chigging heavy and slow. Maybe an oil change will help. What should my temperature be at? It gets to around 100 after a few trips...

I'm thinking I have 2 year old bunk fuel too. I want to go fill it up but I want to make sure it can handle the two mile trip to the station.
