My engine is "Underheating"??

I was just reading the tstat install on the link to dzlgiant.
in a thread below about tstat install.

I just bought a nice 116 300sd and am planning on doing a
2 tank veg system install soon.Issue is that the engine doesnt
seem to heat up at much at all. Which is going to be even
less if i install a 2 tank system. My thoughts on this are
1.The car is from FLA maybe they took the tstat out.
2. The tstat is stuck open
3.the temp gauge is funky
So i guess a new tstat/flush can't hurt.
fluid levels are right to the line in the overflow tank.
Is there a way to check the temp gauge.?It only goes up maybe
to 100 degrees and sometimes falls back down to 0
If it was a bad ground i would suspect a go no go intermittant reading
but this seems to slowly move uo to 100 120 than slowly down to zero
and corresponds to me using the cabin heat(which isn't great) .
I took the car out for a drive yesterday It is about 60 degrees f here.
I was able to touch all the hoses afterward and they where just barely warm
after a 16 mile drive..??
Any thoughts??ideas??

Sounds like there is no t-stat. I ran my 300SD like that for a few days during a citric acid flush. it never warmed over 65 degrees C. The up and down temp needle sounds funky, get an IR thermometer and check the radiator and block for temps.

If the temp gauge is not working correctly change the sender unit in the cylinder head.

your thermostat is 'weak'. Not sure where you are located, but if you insist on running veg, run it hot. Get the hottest thermostat you can find, use both coolant and electric heating, 180 F at the injector...please

For veggie, 160* is all you need.

I had the same problem with my greasecar, the car would get warm or the oil would get warm. I had to decide on heat or hot oil.

I changed out the tstat and it's now fine. In the summer you'll have no problem getting that oil up to temp pretty quick. When winter rolls around again, be sure to add a flat plate heat exhanger to your veggie set-up to make sure the WVO gets up to 160*. That's the magic number.

Good luck, get a good system (frybris is good but the company sucks).

Could be no tstat or bad one; or it might just be nothing at all.

I was surprised at how long my car took to warm up to operating temp when i bought it, and if i just drove around town it seemed to take forever...
but that is kind of the nature of these big heavy blocks too. If you are not tuned into the Benz diesel warmup, it might just be that you are worrying about nothing!

I got a nice temp gauge so I could see what was really going on in my motor.
As said, especially important if running veg.

Don't be too put off by folks on this board slammin you for using veg; you will get lots more optimism for that sort of thing here:
http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/cfrm/f/898605551

It is understandable, the folks at this forum love their Benzes, and see so many nice cars get trashed by starry-eyed bio kids who do it wrong. It can be done right; I did, but after a lot of hassle gave it up for bio-diesel. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips and the incouragement.
i bought a frybrid kit so it has the fphe.
I know there is difering schools of thought on this
veggie thing.I plan to do this right but will
ask for help if and when i need it. There is a
plethora of knowledge on this forum and
It's great to have it at our disposal.
Frybrid is one of the best companies out there.
I am talking about thier systems . I have heard
nightmares about thier customer service.
But i will reserve judgment until i get the kit
and have to ask questions..
Lifes all about the ride ya know

T-stats fail this way all the time. You car should warm to 180F or so, if not that's most likely the cuplret. About the first thing I do to every car I buy is replace filters and t-stat. My 240D was also running cold when I bought it, but I put in a new t-stat and now it warms up fast and runs at 180F on the dot.

Be sure to get the proper anti-freeze. Not the green stuff I think what you need is Zerex G-05. Do a quick search and you'll find it quick.

PS: I have a greasecar kit in my 98 and I love it.

I had the same symtom with my 87' 300sdl when I first bought it. I also had a serious lack of power and no boost pressure. The solution was pretty simple. The fuel filter was slightly clogged and the engine wasn't getting enough fuel. Without enough fuel to burn, it couldn't warm up. By the same token, without enough fuel there weren't enough exhaust gasses to spool up the turbo.

Good news!!l I did a flush and a t-stat replacement. and the car temp gauge
now reads 175 plus.
Bad news I replaced the voltage regulater and the car still does not charge
Guess i will have to yank it and take it to altenaters-r-us.
