240D shifting problem

I have been replacing parts one by one in the attempt to get smooth shifting for automatic 1982 240D. The vacuum hoses and vacuum switches have been replaces as well as the transmission oil and filter. Shifting is better, but I have a ways to go.

The transmission will often just briefly stay in 2nd for about a second and then shift to 3rd. Sometimes its shifts well and usually just at awkward times while accelerating.

I am still looking for ideas to make it shift better. One part appears warn with grooves "lever with cam" Part No. 6160702721 that I have read others say that this could be the problem, however I am having difficulty finding this part.

Any ideas? Thank-you.

There are a couple of good threads that might help.
One on the vacuum adjustment and one on setting the modulator.
I had a similar problem and it helped when I disconnected the EGR. Replaced the Y connectors with unions (keep the orifices).

How much vacuum do you have going to the transmission?

vacuum to transmission

Not sure. I replaced hoses, connectors and door actuators and I seem to recall reading around 15 on the vacuum gauge. I figured that I had fixed all the leaks.

You need to T into the line going to the transmission. That vacuum level should be less and is controlled by orifices and the VCV on the IP. On my 300D is is about 8 at idle and drops quickly to 0 as the engine revs. Do a search for more info on transmission vacuum for 123s. There is one major thread and several others. Watch for replies from Sam Ross and Brian Carlton.

Alaska240D,
Just in case I believe your car's Tranny-Shifter Vacuum Control System's diagram is the one at: http://www.peterschmidtransmission.com/vacuum/1977_1985/616_617_91/616_617_91.jpg

It sounds like you have a combo vacuum hand pump with gauge so you have the most important tool to troubleshoot your problem.

Charles already has you on the right track... but let me ask/suggest:
(a) How long have you had your 240D?
(b) Continue looking for leaks in the various parts of this system,
(c) Check and verify what color restricted orifices [#62 & #63 on the diagram for your car... report same but to us,
(d) IF the orifices are different in color, hold them up to the light [side-by-side] and report back as to which appears to be larger... and remember to keep track and replace them in their original positions. Someone might have drilled one of these out compounding your effort to achieve the proper starting vacuum. Your's appears high.
(e) Most important at this stage of troubleshooting is to put double emphasis on (b) above. You can use golf tees or other means to isolate sections of the vacuum system's plumbing lines and test for leaks.
(f) Yes, seriously consider abandoning the EGR system that branches off the Tranny-shifter system. Again a golf tee is all you need!
Regards,
