'84 300D turbo, "missing" and rumbly engine
Hey all, New diesel owner, 350,000 miles. Just started "missing" and sounds kind of loud and rumbly. Just adjusted valves and replaced both fuel filters and that didn't help. Fixed a couple vacuum leaks, still no good. What's Next?? Never really worked on a diesel before so I'm not sure what to do, or what these symptoms mean. Replaced the turbo a couple of months ago. The car ran great before, but now sounds like it is working way too hard, and it can't be doing it any good. Injectors maybe? Plugged exhaust? I'd like to get another 350,000 out of it. Please give me some hints!! Thanks, Tom

Do a diesel purge. Also look for any fuel leaks. Leaks usually mean air getting into the system. Injectors are another area to look at. Also, clean the banjo bolt that is on the intake in front of the firewall.

Sounds like an air leak in the fuel system, recheck all lines, bolts that you worked on.

Un screw the primer pump and pump it a couple times to see if theirs fuel leaking around the primer piece ,youll need a new one if it is ,possible air leak coming into the fuel supply .
When you changed your fuel filters you might check to see if you had black like pellets in the filters, these are from an algea that grow in diesel fuel after it sits ,the reason their small pellet shaped is they get pulled thru your tank screen. The remedy is to get an alghea killer from your local boat supplier ,theyll carry a startron product that you dump in your tank in recommended amounts per gallon of diesel .This is easy to identify by just dumping the remainder fuel out of your filers into a container a see if the small black pellets are their.Starves your fuel supply at either the tank screen are later when it cloggs your 2nd or primary filter. good luck |

Thanks for the help. I'll look for leaks, clean the banjo bolt, and add some algae killer. I've seen info in this forum on diesel purge so I can follow up on that. You mentioned to look at the injectors. How do you check them? Thanks again. Tom
