1982 300D sunroof seal replacement
Help!
I have removed the original sunroof seals (which had over the years reduced to decayed base strips with no nap left), and have attempted to install replacements that I purchased from www.performanceproducts4benz.com. The replacements were too long; so I cut them to length to match the originals. The replacements have a very "fat" nap. The sunroof won't close; gets stuck with about 1" to go. I tried removing some of the nap to no avail; I am down to 50% of the nap now and it still won't close. Any thoughts anyone? I'm thinking the vendor sent me the wrong seals? Has anyone else tried this with success? In the meantime it's raining in VA and the car's staying in the garage! Simon |

I had the same problem. maybe it`s after market parts?
I had them in and out, triming some, back in, leaving the metal strip loose to get them under as far as I could. finally the metal strip came off the fuzzy . then it seemed to fit better. but I had other problems with the roof closing and used the crank in the trunk to close it up. Maybe give Phill a call in the morning, he might give you some advice or can get the right ones. at the top of the page click on BUY PARTS. buying parts also helps to support the Forum. Charlie ☺

I purchased some of those replacement side seals, had the MB star on them so they were genuine. I still had to trim them down to length.

Had to trim them down to length. Then, I had to hammer them in further with a block of wood. I'd try that.

If you look at the bracket that holds the felt strips in, you will see a couple of detents. These keep the strips from sliding in any farther than they should, but you have to hold the strips up against these detents as you tighten the screws of the bracket. The length shortening is normal. These seals are made for quite a few models.
If you have to beat on them, you have the brackets too tight. Leave them nice and loose until you have the seals in completely.

You need to tap them in with a block of wood to get them to seat. Even with the OE parts they are a bit tight when new.
FWIW, I had several people tell me you must use OE parts for this. The aftermarket seals are indeed too thick. I bought aftermarket seals and had the exact same problem... dd
