Sixto's post has the perfect amount of subtlety and humor, but Junkyard Jim's open hostility is too much. Why did his lack of description make you so angry?

This issue was discussed recently, but the thread was deleted.

If it was only three quarts low on oil, it is unlikely you did any mechanical damage to the engine. It's likely a glow plug or fuel problem. Make sure your glow plugs are getting 12 volts before doing anything else.

I have met Jim in person and I found him to be a very nice man.

I think he had a valid point but did not realize how negatively his post would be seen by others.

Its a very easy medium to post things in that are easily misunderstood, with no facial gestures to read.

The OP on the other hand may well have been very upset and therefore omitted the information needed.

I agree with this. The lack of starting is unlikely to be related to the oil level unless it was run low for a long time.....and more than 3 quarts low too.

After reading this thread I feel I must speak up. I joined this forum one year ago. This forum and it's many patient, knowledgable, and friendly members have been a priceless resource to me and many others. The amount of time some of the members on this forum commit to helping OTHERS is truly amazing, and done so by people who receive nothing in return except hopefully the feeling one gets when they help a friend or neighbor out of a tight spot. This forum seems to have been created and moderated by some very caring and dedicated people who have worked hard to make people feel welcomed and comfortable asking "dumb" questions. God knows I have asked a few myself. I think some people need to bite their tongues and try to exercise a little restraint when a member's post is not up to their particular standards, and instead of beating them down like a bully, take the time to teach by example and with some patience. I will close with this famous quote that has passed the test of time, "If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all"

I agree.

The senior members need to chill a bit. If the post causes your blood pressure to skyrocket............please bypass it.

My policy is to simply suggest that the OP read the following post before posting again:

I request that the senior members do the same.

Sorry about that everybody, I usually forget to name the car I'm talking about, but the car it is, is a 79' Mercedes Benz 300D (stationwagon) non turbo diesel. Also, the car ran and after I shut it off, I wasn't really able to start it again, I found out that there was air getting into the little fuel filter so I tightened it, and it holds now, but I can't get the car started, the engine doesn't turn over, it cranks but doesn't start (or alteast it did before the battery lost it's power) I am trying to charge the battery and we'll see what happens. Sorry about everything, and hope this helps.

I have to hand it to you, Keep on trying!

Pull the spin on fuel filter and see if it is full. My guess is that you will need to fill it up.
then loosen all of the injector lines at the injectors. Crank the car until you see fuel at all of the injectors. Tighten them down. And cycle the GP, and see if it will start.
Must have good charged battery before cranking. Sounds like some air in the system. Have to fight it to get it out.

A weak battery will not allow the car to start.

BTW, add your car's info to your signature. You can do this by going to UserCP in the upper left corner of the forum page. Also add you location. there are many members who would drive over to offer assistance.

If you got air into the injection pump (IP), this air will need to be bled from the IP. Do this by pumping the hand primer pump on the side of the IP untill you hear a buzzing from the relief valve. Finally, loosen the injector lines at each injector and crank with the accelerator smashed to the floor until you see fuel coming from the lines. Tighten the injector lines and try to start.

I would check the glow plugs by keeping the door open when turning the key to "on" the glowplugs will operate for about 30 seconds (longer than the gp light on the dash stays lit) You can tell they are done when the dome light gets brighter. Then crank it and see if it will fire.

I would do this after getting the air out of the system.

Thank You Everybody!!!

Thanks, I was trying to start my car today but it wasn't starting with the help of a honda civic that is 1.7l, so I decided to try and start it with a 3.3l toyota sienna and after a couple tries it STARTED! A little bit of smoke came out and it ran good after that. Now all I will do is change the air filter because it's dirty and start driving it again, after my friends and everybody thought my car would NEVER start and I should take it to a junkyard. I guess they sure were wrong, hope this car runs for many more years to come. Thanks again.

Have the battery checked. You can easily get a surface charge that will start the car most of the time, but, in a weak condition, it puts a lot of strain on the starter, not to mention the charging system.
