Get someone else to work the pump for you this will leave your 2 hands free to rotate and tighten the IP and decreases the chance of an error.

Got around to adjusting the injection pump tonight and I'm still running in to the same issue - pump continuously or stop and adjust?

If I pump continuously, the flow never "drips", no matter how far I rotate the pump - in either direction. If I quit pumping and rotate, I can get it to a point where it is one drip per second, but the longer I let it drip -without pumping- it eventually slows down...

This seems like no better than guessing! Is this right? Pump up the fuel - stop pumping - rotate - stop rotating at one drip per second - pump again and check after I stop pumping?

Confused? Me too!

Any advice?

ryan

If the crankshaft is properly positioned and rotating the pump won't get it to the "drip" point, you will probably need to remove the pump and re-index it. You have most likely run out of "adjustment." You can confirm that by rotating the crankshaft until the drip begins and noting the position relative to TDC.

So, I should be able to get it to drip WHILE pumping the primer pump. Right? I didn't think this was the case...

I just thought the process seemed really inaccurate...

Yes. Think of it like it's a faucet valve almost turned completely off, but not quite.

The flow will go from "full" to "nil" in very short order. It will make more sense once you see it happen.

The primer pump gets the system up to a specific pressure. As fuel runs out of the system, the pressure falls. Ideally, you'd test for 1 drip per second at full primer pressure. If you're not leaking fuel in a stream, the fuel pressure will stay sufficiently high at one drop per second. If you are not close to the proper setpoint (late), the fuel will run out of the drip tube and the pressure will fall quickly...........thereby making the check for one drop per second inaccurate.

Yes, the best accuracy is with full pump pressure..........but few will continue to pump the primer while simultaneously attempting to set the IP...........you'd need three hands.
