fuel leak after spin filter change

I have a fuel leak on my spin filter right where the center bolt touches its base on top of the filter. I didn't see any o-ring or washer except the two rubber o-rings that are in the middle of the bolt(ones that go inside the filter when the bolt is tighten). I didn't bother changing the two o-rings cause they look fine and I wasn't sure if I suppose to force them in and out of the groove
(I didn't have the time then if things would go wrong). Could I have dropped a washer or o-ring without knowing it? Or must I change that two o-ring to stop the leak?

Oops I 4got, it's 84 300D Turbo.

Did you just spin it on? Or did you tighten the bolt from the top too? I don't have the torque spec in front of me, but I had to really crank down on the bolt to get the wrench to click.

On my 240, I filled the new filter with ATF, a thin film on the rubber gasket, spun it on, then tightend and torqued it down, never had a leak.

Both, I think, may be it's just not tightened enough, but the base piece looks fragile so I was kinda gentle with it.
What's the purpose of filling the new filter with ATF? I've heard some people say it's good for the injector, but I don't see how.
Thanks 4 da help.

Ditto on the new O-rings. When I changed mine I thought I could get away with out changing the O-rings but mine also leaked.
Lucky for me I have one of those generic O-ring assortments and found one that worked.

What I learned was do not change the filter unless you alread have the O-rings in hand or have another car to drive while your Mercedes sits unitil you get the O-rings.

ditto

ditto o-rings. I just did this job on my 606 this weekend. Did the diesel purge, oil/filter change, air filter change and totally forgot about the o-rings on the shutoff valve. Only occurred to me when it got stinky. Good now.

I used a bit of harvey seal once to temporarily stop the leak while I got new o-rings. I just coated it from the rings up and it lasted for a week or two.

It cleans build up off. Filling you filters isn't going to do a bunch of cleaning but it helps a little. And filling the filter reduces the amount of pumping you will have to do with the primer pump to get the system primed again.

I rarely change the o-rings. I usually loosen the bolt just enough to be able to spin the filter off. Then I spin on the new filter and retighten the bolt. I never take it out. And I've never had a leak in the 25k miles I have on my wagon. Though it's probably a good idea to change them once it a while.

copper crush washer

I had a similar issue, new o-rings did not help but a new crush washer under the filter retaining bolt did the trick. I have seen other posts with the same problem, do a search.
Cheers
K

I was beginning to wonder whether I was the only one with a crush washer. Now I'm wondering if the washer is supposed to do the sealing or the o-ring?

both do the sealing. You need to replace both. Just fill the filters with diesel fuel rather than atf.

Some have the crush washer, others do not. The only time I had a leak, I replaced the crush washer, solved.
