83 300 D Not starting in Park, and even Neutral

If there is anyone out there that could point me in the right direction for correcting a problem with my 83 300 D, it usually won't start in the morning in park and usually won't start in the morning or when it's damp even in neutral. Lately I've had to go through activating the glow plug, have the gear in reverse, and then when the glow plug light goes off, I shift from reverse to neutral while at the same time turning over the key. That has been working until this week.

Currently it is a game of roulette and I would really just like to have a car that starts.

Would someone please educate me to what the problem is and if there is a course of action to restore reliable start-up.

Thanks

It could one or two things. How much slop do you have in your gear selector? It has bushings that can and do wear out over time. Get under the car and manually shift the car into park at the transmission, then try to start. If it does then your linkage requires attention. If you are positive that it is in park and it still will not start, then more than likely your neutral safety switch needs to be replaced.

It`s probably your neutral safety switch on the transmission. or it could be your shifter bushings are gone creating slop in the shift rod.

on the pass. inner fender near the battery is a small black box with some wires. pull the cover up and there are 3 screws. short across 2 of them and the engine will start. on my car it is the 2 forward screws.

place shifter in park, turn key for glow plugs. I use a pair of needle nose.

I only had to do this when my NSW was acting a couple times.

More info

Thanks to the two guys who responded so far. Where is the neutral safety switch located and how readily can a guy remove/replace it?

Thanks again

The neutral safety switch is on the driver side of the tranny, get under the car and look for a rectangular grey box,it will have the linkage rod attached to the center of it,its bbest to have the car somehwat lifted to have better access to this, youll need a 10mm socket and a wrench or 2 wrenches to loosen the 2 bolts on a clamp that holds the rod to the switch, anyway it would also help to inspect the pins and wires arent broken off(they connnect to the side of the nss) have a good look forst before you remove, good luck.
