UGH! that alternator looks downright UGLY next to that georgeous motor! time to pull it apart and wire wheel it into submission!
seriously, that motor looks awesome! It would look even better with the valve cover done in glossy black!

Just curious, how well does this engine fit into a 4 runner? I want a rock crawler but it must have a diesel engine. How much did it cost? Is it street legal with the diesel engine?

I coated the degreased Barbs with Silicone Sealant as the hose ID was not a tight fit. I could not find better clamps that were small enough in time to finish the job and doubled up on the regular hose clamps.
Been in use for about 1 year now with no leaks in the hoses or where they are hooked up.
Hi Diesel911
On your last photo, the connector on top has some white color sealant on.
What kind of sealant was that?

The engine & trans assembly was $650. I made the adapters myself. This is not an easy swap. 1.5 years ago, this was legal to do in Maryland. The emmisions-people said bring in the e-notice when you get it, we walk out, verify its a diesel, and make the change in our system. Now, knowing Maryland, this swap is probably illegal, and is punishable by a $10,000 fine and removal of one testicle.

January 1st, my truck is "historic" (20 years old). No emmisions. No state safety inspections, so I'm waiting if I finish the truck early. Below is a link to the build thread.

Did you design the adaptor? Edit: nevermind. any details?

I would think you would get around 25 MPG. 36-38 is unrealistic even in the more aerodynamic Mercedes Body (unless you are selling your car on eBay).

I think that to weld the fittings to the lower oil cooler to hoses steel tubes that come from the Oil Filter Housing; those Tubes need to be removed.
I don't think that will make it less of a PITA. However, the next time the hoses need changing it will be a snap to do so.

I don't think 36-38 is going to happen either. I hope I get at least 30 MPG.

Any questions about the adapter in particular?

yeah exactly. You cut off the male junction near the ac compressor from the stock lines and weld on some AN type fitting...

Here is a set that I fabricated at customer request.

Machining one end of each fitting to 15 MM inner diameter, Welding + 1000 PSI pressure test $60.00

Fabrication of the 3000 PSI Hoses + buy fittings $70.00

My time to R&R the set $50.00

FOR A TOTAL OF $180.00
Note: Your local cost will vary, I just did another set today (8-16-2011) = supplies and fabrication total $95.00 for the pair.

Comparison of part cost..

Fabbing is very viable for 603 though I'd bet.

Bottom oil cooler line failure

Almost 4500 miles after replacing my original oil cooler lines with aftermarket lines from **********; my bottom oil cooler line failed (busted) while driving 70 miles/hour on Interstate I-75.
Those aftermarket lines are made with lift trucks-like hoses (hydraulic) not rated for high temperature. The bottom one is always one that fail because the top one is cooler after the oil goes through the exchanger. This is the second time that I experience this (both times with newer aftermarket lines). On my next setup; I will pay 3 or 4 times more and use Mercedes OEM lines rated for both high temperature and high pressure. I also will invest in some kind of low oil pressure warning buzzer.

Where exactly did it bust? Did you shut the engine down in time?
