Water Pump Pulley Diameter 617 engine
I have a non-turbo 617 engine (300D) , and a Turbo 617 (300SD).
The water pump pulley on both appears the same diameter. Have done water pumps on both and have had pulleys off. At the junkyard today went to get replacement pulleys for the 300D. I wanted double belt water pump. The first car I took pulleys from was 82 300D turbo. The water pump pulley hit the lower pulley coming off and is larger, by maybe one half to one whole inch. This particular pulley actually had an MB parts stucker on it. Could not read the part number. But the pulley seemed new. On a second car, a 84 300SD 617 turbo I noticed the pulley on water pump was smaller, like I was used to. Smaller pulley, faster the water pump spins, larger pulley , pump spins slower. My question to you all is: Did they offer two pulley sizes on Diesel MB's in the 1980's and does anyone have any background on this ? I went with the smaller one that matches my current pulley diameter.

Yup, a running change for A/C and engine cooling. My '85 has the smaller one too. Also the larger aux fan, more efficient A/C condenser, and plastic fan.
BMW did similar with their M30s in the late 80s.

Hit Man X. Explain further, was the larger pulley supposed to offer better cooling ?
I am torn between the idea of slowing down the pump to give the water time to cool and having a faster pump to push more water through. Which one cools better or cools more ? I live in the desert and have plus 90 heat most of the time. Should I go with the larger pulley ?

Smaller... it moves water faster AND the fan faster. It simply overdrives the pump by a few percent. MB redesigned it for a reason. The plastic fan is lighter weight and should be more efficient due to less mass. Ever put bigger wheels/tires on a vehicle and made it slower? Same premise here. Forged rims versus cast are lighter and have less rolling resistance. The aux fan grew vastly as the early one could barely keep up, 1990+ W126s received DUAL aux fans even to further improve performance. You may want to check the EPC to see if MB changed the crank pulley too.
BMW had same issues on the M30 six, A/C condenser tubes became smaller to increase surface area to dissipate heat, the fan blade was redesigned a few times, smaller water pump pulley (faster fan speed and water flow), different thermostat housing for more even cooling, and even a different crank pulley to overdrive the A/C compressor at idle for more performance. My climate is horrible, humidity and heat. Every little bit helps.

yup, small pulley is best for cooling and a/c

Belt size on small pulley
when I changed out motors on the 81 300sd installing the 85's motor I ran into this problem.
The small pulley would not allow belts to tighten so I used the large pulley from the 81 and the plastic fan from the 85. Now knowing this isn't correct I would like to install the smaller pulley. The 85 300sd had the same belts as the 81 but were adjusted out full and slipping bad. Can anyone help me with a belt size or number ?

belt sizes
Found what I think is correct in a newly started thread.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showpost.php?p=2561765&postcount=24 not trying to hi jack the thread adding belt size for different pulley sizes seemed appropriate without starting a new thread.
