Transmission differences? (w123/w126)

I'm looking at cobbling together an engine and tranny, a car with a blown engine, and a car with a wasted tranny..
The problem is.. The car with the wasted tranny (300SD) is in Arizona.. The car with the wasted engine (300Dt) is in Missouri, and the available donor engine transmission is in Michigan..
..Oh, and I'm in Ohio, closest to the engine/tranny, but even that's 70 miles from me.
I wanted to know-- since the w123 and w126 used the same 5 cylinder turbodiesel, if in fact, they used the same transmission and final drive.. That is, are they "interchangeable.." While I assume they did-- I need some verification before I plop down cash to buy the three, to make two running vehicles.
Thanks in advance,
AJ RN

The only real difference is the W126 uses an electric speedo drive and the W123 mechanical.

The tailhousing and speedo drive is easy to swap. The guide can be found on the forum.

I have done it successfully. PM me if you need help. Youll also need a special tool to remove the tailshaft. Also replace the rear seal while your in there and done reuse the tailhousing gasket

the special tool is a 31mm extremely tall socket. You can buy it at the dealer for a fortune, or make your own by cutting a short 31mm (oh and has to be 12 point) and welding it to a deep socket. The bolt is extremely tight and im my case I had to use a 3 foot breaker bar and had a fat kid sit on the engine becuase my tourque wanted to tip it over.

You can also get the socket at Grainger for aroung $8.00. It is a deep thin wall socket.

What is the tightening torque value for the lock nut on the tail piece of the trans? Is there a specific torque? There's no bearing load or anything to do like on a differential is there?

I will be putting a W123 trans into my W126 soon and will need to swap the tail pieces....
