Lightbulb While We're At It: What Would You Do Too

1983 300D 143,xxx miles

I'm scheduled to get in the garage with my friend/mechanic on Monday, Nov. 24th. We're replacing the fan clutch, water pump, and the lower oil cooler hose. My question to all of you experts out there is this: what else should I just tack on to the job while we have the fan off and everything wide open. Is there anything I should just do now that I'm going to end up having to do in the near future anyway, or are there things that are more than likely brittle and breaking that should be checked or replaced? What would you do?

Replace all the belts.

With the fan off, wash the radiator from the inside of the hood out.

Of course replace the antifreeze with Zerex G05

If you are on a lift, replace the transmission filter and fluid. Make sure you drain the torque converter too. Spin the engine clockwise with a 22mm socket on the crankshaft until you line up the TC drain plug with the window in the bellhousing. I take some yellow paint and mark the harmonic balancer with a dot that lines up with the timing marks. makes it easier the next time you need to drain the TC.

Do a power steering flush and fill and remeber to change the ps filter.

I can't think of anything else.

Do the upper oil cooler line too. Make sure your engine mounts and engine shocks and mounts are all good too since you have to undo them (driver side anyway) to do the oil cooler lines.

Maybe replace the oil filter housing gasket if needed.

EDIT: I see some others starting typing before I did.

Assuming you have access to a lift check all of the steering/suspension components and motor mounts. Check the exhaust.

with all that free space up in the front, it is a great time to adjust your valve lash.

I was assuming you'd replace the 2" bypass hose, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

..and if all those coolant members are coming off, there is a spring in the timing chain tensioner that gets badly worn -almost to the point of breaking- and is cheap enough to replace. This is more important if your model does not have the ratcheting tensioner type; but important either way.

Yep, you want to do that when the water pump is out.

Make sure to use a 27mm socket on the crankshaft bolt. 22mm is too small.

x3 on upper oil cooler line

That part is not accessible when the waterpump is out, the pump housing has to be removed.

You're most of the way there though. You can test your thermostat to make sure it doesn't need to be replaced as well.

My recollection is that the thermostat housing needs removal.................not the water pump housing.
