Help me Help HIM
A registered member of the forum... for only about a week... pm'd me about getting the head off his 615 engine. He has no posts to the forum.
I don't know why he did not post a thread so more knowledge could be accessed... but I have looked at my paper 615,616,617na manual and am not able to find anything which seems helpful... He is stranded in Spain, got burned on his arm during the overheating incident which is causing the need to take off the head... and just got out of the hospital having been treated for that burn... he needs to take the boat back to Portugal... Anyway, for whatever reason he did not start a thread himself, I am asking for any insight on this issue : He is needing to take the head off the 615. He has the model (B) tensioner... the cast framework one. The book tells how to take model (A) tensioner slipper... very thin --off. It says not to take the model (B) tensioner off when doing the head removal. Is there anything more to this picture I , or he , does not see ? for the husker type tensioner .... does it just stay in place nicely ? Is he imagining a problem he actually does not have .... the need to remove the style tensioner he has ? Thanks, Greg |

On the 616 you have to at least pull ot the spring before the head comes off. On the 617 versions w/ the ratcheting type, the whole thing needs to come out.
Shouldn't all the towers be removed before lifting the head? Sorry I am not familiar with that engine. |

He has the towers off.... he is just concerned with the tensioner... but my FSM sounds like you can just take the head off without messing with that particular style of tensioner..

Out of curiosity, what is the difference?
And what is the issue in removing it? |

Well, most Ibots would not go to the trouble of learning about a 615 engine enough to ask good questions... LOL
But I won't be sending any money to him..LOL The difference is one is a very skinny slipper looking thing... the other is a cast item with strengthening ribs .... |

are you referring to the rail, or the oil-filled tensioner that pushes on the rail (passenger side of timing cavity)

The Rail comes out via a pin situated in the front of the engine. It is located down by the crankshaft. The pin has a threaded hole that a bolt screws into.
There is a special tool that removes the pin, however i was able to but a bolt in it along with a piece of metal to make a slide hammer of sorts . it took some time and patience, but it did pop out.

If you are talking (and this is the only slipper looking thing I can think of) about the chain guide that looks like a banana, it does not need to come out to get the head off.
There is a ribbed guide on the right side of the head that needs to come out. Or actually just one threaded pin to pull and I think the larger bolt just underneath it needs to come off as well.

The FSM calls it a tensioner.... and there are two styles.... the really skinny one does come off before taking the head off... there is a ' special' tool to grab it with and pull it out after taking out the holding pins.... the more robust one which looks cast with ribbing does not have to be removed to take off the head... so that is what we told the guy about given his description...
Interesting also is that he says he is from New Orleans.... there is a person by his name who is a musician from there... |
