w124 turbo charger drinking oil, whistling

My 1987 300TD has been making odd whistling noises for a month or so. When it ran low on oil this past week I decided something was probably wrong with the turbo. Turbos are beyond my DIY capabilities, so I took it to an indy mechanic.

He says that the turbo is "drinking oil" and is making the whistling noises. He says it needs a rebuild, but that that year and model of car had a lifetime warranty on it and I should go to the dealer and get it taken care of.

Anyone every heard of such a thing? I couldn't find anything on Google (or here) and I'd love to have documentation I could take with me to the dealer . . .

Thanks for any help

Tim
