My fan will occasionally not work when its cold as well. I don't have an EVIL servo or a coolant temperature switch.

Maybe it's that car's way of payback..."Make me go out in the cold, I'll show them!!"

I have not had that problem yet, and all the stuff is hooked up, except for the HVAC vacuum due to pod leaks.

similar problem

im having a similar problem with my blower motor, i have a 91 300E 160 000 Km on it, the problem is that i melted the blower motor fuse on a hot summer day and replaced it with a Hd 30amp fuse and when i wired it and tested it, it worked fine. However now its winter and the motor only works when it wants to. Itll kick on for a few seconds and then shut off, sometimes never returning and its freezing out. Any suggestions would be helpful please thank you

It warmed up yesterday and my blower started working. When it cools down again and the blower stops working my next diagnostic process is to get a heat gun and start blowing warm air on various component to see if I can find out which one is causing the problem. I'll try the amp first, then the blower itself, then the push button unit, then the servo. My hypothesis is that there is a poor or cracked connection somewhere and that contraction in cold weather is interrupting the flow of current.

Lance, how can you not have a cold engine blower cut off sensor? My 85TD without the servo has one.

We're having a heat wave so the blower's been working flawlessly.

Did some more diagnostics today. Here's the history. Blower wasn't working. It had been cutting in and out prior to quitting altogether. Checked voltage to blower and it as very low--I think around half a volt or something. Blower ran when hot wired directly. These tests were done in relatively warm weather I think. Replaced the amp since there was evidence of overheating on the board. Blower then worked in warm weather but stopped below about 20 degrees or so. Tried warming up the amp and servo today with a heat gun when it was cold outside. No blower. I decided to check voltage at the blower again and discovered it is now getting 12 volts but not turning. My conclusion is the blower itself is the problem now. I'm thinking my amp was also bad, causing the low voltage when I initially checked it. Next step will be to remove and either replace, or disassemble and check the brushes. I haven't figured out how to disassemble it yet since it appears to be a sealed motor with no screws visible to disassemble it.

Kerry,
Can you find the brushes? Check them, they may be worn down and not making solid contact but are relatively easy to replace.

Here is the brush replacement on a 123-
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123BlowerBrush

If you find the motor/blower itself to be bad, I still have the blower from my parted 116, but seeing as how the amp from mine did not solve/fix the problem you may not want to go that route.

Replaced the blower with one from the junkyard. It's working now. It's not a definitive test because it has warmed up outside into the high 20's. My current explanation of what was happening is that the brushes in the motor were not making good contact in cold weather. I experimented with the old motor and my battery charger. Sometimes it would work when energized and sometimes it wouldn't.

Accessing the brushes in a 116 blower is not as easy as a 123. The motor is sealed. I may dicker around with it when I have some time. I think there is a thread here somewhere describing how to disassemble/reassemble a sealed motor.

You could put some ice packs/frozen food under the blower to try and chill it to see if it works in the cold if you can't wait for the temp to drop...

Hopefully this works for you.

I haven't pulled the 116 blower out of the housing so I never looked at it and didn't know that. I do know the blower worked in my car, but I never tested it in weather below about 60 degrees this summer so it could have the same symptoms as yours FAIK.

Good luck!
