Alternator question

Ok here is the skinny, when I drive any where ( but I notice it more in the mornings on the way to work) I have the head lights on and the blower fan running and about 2 miles from the house, the lights will get brighter and the fan speeds up.

It's almost like it's running on say 10 volts and then BAM 13.2 volts or something like that. Any one have this happen???

I am thinking that the voltage regulator is slowly going out???

Thanks Doc.

What's the speed limit? Your Prius won't start the gas engine until you get going fast enough, or romp on it. Try driving faster from the start, or buying a car with a real engine.

^stuck glow relay could cause this.

checking on the voltage regulator is a good place to start.

while you are there, pull the electrical connection off the alterator and clean the contacts. could be an intermittent connection causing the sporadic charging.

Voltage regulator brushes worn down. Check and clean battery ground wire connection to body.

try this, when your starting the car. rev it up in park or neutral to about 4000 rpm's and then let off, if it increases the brightness then its just your alternator picking up the signal and kicking on.

I have a 96 E300d, and my car operates as you describe. I have a Scanguage attached to the obd port at all times, and when I first start up on cold mornings 20-30 degrees, I notice that the voltage drops down to 11.9 volts, and stays that way for about 45 seconds to a minute. Then it goes up to 13.4 to 13.6 volts. I think in my case it is due to the glow plugs remaining on for that period of time due to the cold starting temperatures.
