Hopefully I can get the IP from strelnik and get her started.

If this ends up being a DIY i'll pm you my number becasue the bleeding part might get to me a little bit. I really appreciate your offers, and once I get her home I can see what I need to get. Hoping it's just the IP.

After six months of waiting for repairs, then to have the shop suddenly come up with "we had it running, then the pump went" I'd be suspicious of their experience/ability. They had their chance five+ months ago. I'd pull the car out of that shop and start doing the troubleshooting work yourself BEFORE replacing the injection pump (the work previously mentioned by other members). As mentioned, it COULD be something ridiculously simple and a HECK of alot less expensive than what this shop may get you into!

I have changed fuel injection pumps several times on these old benzes but it has never been the problem. YOu have to work at it to make one go bad.

I would ask them how they know its a bad injection pump and ask them to put in writing that if they put in a new pump and it still won't run that they won't charge you for the labor and will reimburse you for the new pump.

Is there oil in the injection pump? I would imagine if the oil in the IP was not replenished for a long time, or leaked out, or if the car had been sitting a LONG time, the plungers inside might start to seize up & seals dry up. Somewhere on here or another forum I read about someone with a diesel fintail (200D) reviving their "frozen" pump after it had dried out, I think by taking it apart & soaking the plungers in penetrating oil. I don't think I would dare to do that myself though as I have the habit of having leftover parts after I put everything back together Another problem could be air (from a fuel line leak) that has become trapped in the IP....there is an air bleed screw on it.

I would take it home and diagnose from there! That diagnosis sounds fishy.
With all the help on this forum you should be able to find the problem quickly.

Me and my friends resurrected a 220D off a farm that had been sitting for 10+ years with the windows down. We got it running and drove it home across the desert no problem.

No injector lines?

No wonder it won't run

Strelnik has some good advice for getting it started. Since your injector lines are removed, he (or someone else) may have some steps to take first to narrow down the potential issues. There are a lot of things you can do before you have to spend any money! (my .02).

Other than that, I think the consensus is to get that baby home and use this brain trust (not me) to diagnose the problem(s).

I too have a feeling the mechanic was buying more time stating the injection pump was bad. If it's leaking air bad enough to not stay running, I could understand how one might think the injection pump is not doing it's job.

Keep us posted and use lots of pictures to describe symptoms and what you've done. Good Luck!

Thumbs down

Talked to him again today, and he says it is the injector pump. If I can get it for him, he'll show me how to put it in and once it's in, I can drive it away from the prison it's being held at.

He assured me that once that pump is in, it will be up and running again, and I saw that the injector lines on the the passenger side floor, so they're all there. HE BETTER BE RIGHT because if that pump goes in and it doesn't work. Seriously, all hell is going to break loose and whatever part of the country y'all are in, you will either hear or feel the hell that has been unleashed...

He said he'll also put it in (with me there) the day I get the pump.

Would it fit?

Does anyone know if a 240D IP would work on this 220D?

It's the only thing stopping me from driving it off the lot!!!
