How to tell if Trans is good?
So my engine rebuild is just about complete on my 84 300sd. I am getting ready to turn my attention to the trans.
I have a trans out of a 83 300sd that according to the odometer only had 77000 miles on it (owned by a old man that only drove it on sunday, etc.) I plan on using it with my rebuild, my current trans has 238000 miles on it. I have never seen it work. How do I determine if it is good and just how much work I should put into it? As a min I figured fluid, and pan gasket and new modulator. Should I just rebuild the whole thing? |

Are you SURE it only had 77K miles on it? Don't trust odometers on these things...
If you are sure it only had 77K, I would use it as is. BUT- I would reseal the front pump and TC seal , at a minumum. If it sat for many years unused, I might think about rebuilding, because clutch pack seals can get hard etc. Personally , I would really like you to rebuild it ( and do it before I rebuild mine) Rick

I think oldsinner means B2 piston (which was problematic)rather than B1. Those have gotten awfully pricey....I am going to just trust my luck when I rebuild. Anything I can get to without having to pull the tranny I figure can break, if it so desires....
