The W201 190D has an electromagnetic idle control solenoid that does increase the idle speed. I don't think it has nearly enough travel to give full throttle, though.

Perhaps while working with the vacuum lines, something fouled one of the numerous throttle linkage pieces? How about a runaway cruise control actuator (that comment about being near the battery made me think of that).

Cast My Vote for Incorrect Shut Off Installation!

There is only One way to install the Vacuum Shut Off Valve correctly on the
pump on the 2.5 5 Cyl.
AND the accused has already admitted to "Having the VSV Off the Pump".

Note: Being able to use the mechanical EMERGENCY shut off... DOES NOT MEAN
you've installed the VSV correctly!

DO NOT SCREW AROUND running this engine until you have POSITIVE proof
that you've installed the VSV correctly!!!

You have been exceedingly lucky (You have not had a "Runaway"...Yet!)

It will "Spool UP" much faster than you can stop it ...Don't even think about
using "Bolt Cutters" on the Injection Lines...By the time you've managed to
cut two ...It'll have "Launched" the #1 Rod...(Guess Where?).

Thank you guys for the info im going to screw around with this some more today. I have a vac pump it makes the vacum issues much easier to find. I will reinstall the vacum shut off and check to make sure it is installed correclty. as for the cruise control the linkage is missing going from the accelarator to the cruise control module so i dont think tat is it. JonL the electromagnetic idle control solenoid do you know where this is under the hood. also does anyone know where a manual of some sort for this car can be found neither hanyes od chiltons makes one and i have not been able to find any info anywhere. thank you guys for the help hopefully it will be runnig right soon as i can not wait to save some money on fuel.

ok i have reinstalled the vsv and am pretty sure it is in correctly. you can not see the hole it slips into once the valve is in but im pretty sure its in the proper way. the engine only runs away when the key is in the on position if you turn it to the off position it idles really rough but smooths out at about 1000 rpm. it seems to run pretty well when the key is in the off position. anymore help would be great has anyone delt with this issue before its really racking my brain does anyone have a blow up of the injector pump. im pretty sure that my motor is a w201 its a 2.5 5cyl im contimplating pulling the injector pump and putting the valve in with the pump out of the car are there rebuild kits avalible for this pump cause ill probably rebuild it while its out.

The idle speed controller is a big roundish thing right on the back of the injection pump. There is a two-pin connector at the top of the device. The connector goes to a wire that snakes through the intake manifold where there is a similar two-pin connector laying flat on one of the runners. You can disconnect it at either place.

As far as a manual, there is a huge PDF available on the 'net. I'd be surprised if there isn't a link to it from this forum someplace. Seek and ye shall find.

I specifically bought a Mecedes IDI because they are about THE most tolerant engine there is when it comes to alternative fuels, and that's what I wanted - to be able to use alternative fuels.
