W123 Turn Signal Trouble
I recently replaced the transmission on my 1983 240D, and unfortunately, the car was sitting in the garage for almost two months. The electrical system must have atrophied. The turn signals no longer work and they worked great before. I checked the fuses, which were fine, I also knew because the brake lamps still work. Maybe a relay? Any ideas?

You might try pulling the bulbs and then putting them back in as sometimes corrosion on a contact is an issue. My rear light went out and was resurrected by the method.

Well, the hazards work, so I don't think it's the bulbs, there is also no reaction inside the car, like on the dash.

Sounds like your combo stalk is on the fritz. Brights work?

Lets do a full recon:
yank the bulbs, spray the contacts with CRC cleaner(specifically plastic/rubber safe variety) remove the cover from the stalk, spray with cleaner Remove the relevant fuses, throw them out, spray with cleaner, and replace with copper/brass fuses Report back

I don't think it's the stalk, and the brights do work, and it's certainly not the bulbs, I don't even want to touch those. I took the fuse out and put in another, same situation, blinkers don't work, brake lights do. What is this cover on the stalk?

It's either the relay or the combo switch.

Blimey, how do I check if it's the relay?

The relay is just ahead of the shifter, under the wood console. Its a long square relay and I bet you a nickel its the issue. If its not pushed in all the way it won't work right. It could also be the emerg. flasher switch as everything for the blinkers goes through it.

I had similar issues with mine after I brought it to florida. Get a new set of fuses from MB, the full kit is a few dollars. The old fuses seemed to corrode against the fuse block terminals. When you replace the fuses, remove the battery and give the fuse block terminals a good cleaning with a wire brush and the coat it with dielectric grease and install the new fuses. I solved quite a few little on sometimes, off sometimes gremlins with this approach.

Well, I sort of had an on-off problem with my wipers, but that was solved by just replacing the fuse. The turn signals haven't worked since I started the car like two weeks ago

As mentioned in a previous post, on your car the relay is NOT the hazard flasher, check forward of the shifter under the console for the relay, its about $40.

Well, turns out it is one of those on-off things because I just went out there and they work. I think it may have something to do with the hazard switch though, because I went out and I turned them on just to triple check that all the bulbs work and then I decided to double check if the maybe just the blinker indicators weren't working, but the blinkers are, but I flipped the combo switch and it's back to normal.

I still recommend replacing the old style fuses, cleaning the fuse box terminals and dielectric greasing the fuse/terminals, on again off again is a sympton of dirty connections and will change with the weather. The old style fuses are made of a different material and seem to have dissimilar metal corrsion at the connections. Also, you can carefully take apart the hazard switch and clean it out too, the turn signal power goes through that switch.

Should I replace the fuses with new fuses or new-style fuses? What would new-style fuses look like?
