Reverse lights switch - 124
'87 300D
My reverse lights aren't going on. The lights will go on if I wiggle the shift lever in "R" and all else looks OK so it must be the switch. I wouldn't really care except I believe the starter interlock is in the same switch so it makes me a bit nervous about a possible future problem starting the car. I took a look under there yesterday and all the connections are clean and snug. Getting a new switch in might be tough, the switch looks like a pretty tight fit. Anyone out there ever change this with the tranny in the car? Any special tools necessary or tricks you can warn me about? I'm not looking forward to this one. Thanks.

I've replaced the switch in a sedan so most likely it can be done in a wagon.
Before replacing, try centering the switch about the adjustment range. Have someone yell out when the reverse lights go on and off as you move the switch then guess where the center of the on range is. Before that, make sure the shift rod bushings are in good shape. Sixto 87 300D |

Thanks Sixto. I actually have the sedan so maybe it's not as hard as it looks. It seems that the space between the lip on the tranny pan and the trans tunnel is tight and it will be tough to move a wrench in there. I guess I'll start with a new switch and fiqure it out from there. Thanks for the hint about centering it.
