help! steering went whacky while driving!!

Hey all,

last night I pulled a 3 point turn while dropping off my boss at her apartment. I hear a click but it didnt sound too much like a pop, I thought little of it, and continued. While turning on to the street I noticed that my steering wheel required more rotations to turn my wheels, than it required before.

this is my 75 300D by the way, when out of the car, in park, I turn the wheel from end to end, and there is not a lapse of movement. To say, the wheels continue turning, there is no "dead space", I have experienced play in other steering wheels, where you can almost knock the wheel from side to side. this doesnt feel to be the case on my wheel. I got it home safe, felt like i was driving a clown car though..

I have recently disconected my power steering pump, and have been driving it manually. My pump was being quite jumpy, even after a flush.

I used the search function and found this page
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=229600&highlight=steering+wheel+play&page=2

the second post down describes with pictures and diagrams from a fsm for a 126, is there a similar adjustment procedecer for the stearing box in the 115?

Something similar happened to a friend of mine, but it was the front subframe that came off instead. Motor dropped, CV's came apart, bearings all over the place. Worse part was she didn't give my neighbor time to pull the converter out before junking it.

Removing the gearbox should not effect the alignment.
Note: use a binder strap to support the gearbox, preventing it from smashing/dropping or injuring you.
* Separate the pitman arm from the center link.
* Remove the hoses.
* Disconnect the flex coupling from gearbox.

the ball joint on the center link is being a filthy whore, were trying to locate a pickle fork sadly it seems to be our last resort. We tried to remove the pitman arm with a puller tool but no luck, the threads on the puller tool are starting to show signs of wear. this is begining to be a headache.

If it helps you relax a bit and think straight about the problem, then by all means do it.

I'm not familiar with your model, but I understand enough about steering boxes to know what you're trying to do. A lot of McParts stores stock pickle forks these days, if you're having trouble finding one.

I found a fracture on a previous weld plate, that was imposed to secure the bolts, in prevention of the same thing that has occurred. It is my plan to get a 1/4" to 1/2" plate of steel, cut it to size, drill a couple of holes, then weld it directly to the frame. whoever welded it last must have only been thinking a few years in advance...

this is a pain
ill get a pickle fork, get that puppy out and pull those bolts out.
if i can get a friends camera i will post some pictures of this all.

after all of this, I am so so so so so so glad that this occurred after a long night of delivering through the hills, for if the same thing happened on one of the hills i was driving that night instead of a nice straight away home, I may have been sleeping with the fish by now.

makes me cuss softly in german..

Only softly? I'd be using English, but doing it loudly so that the car could understand.

Good luck! You sound like you're on the right track.
