Forum idiot is an understatement.
Well don't beat yourself up over doing a few nitwit things here and there ... it doesn't make you an idiot. I think plenty of people have embarrassing or agonizing stories here about one little careless error that leads to a massive damage control effort. I know it's easy to get frustrated ... especially when you have to set aside a problem that you don't know the solution to. I feel just awful because I can't get the nut out of the UCA, and two days in a row I have had to leave it to go to work with no progress. Already about 10 times I have concluded I shouldn't even try to work on cars because I'm just not strong enough and I don't know how to use the tools, etc. ... but every time I figure out the problem, sometimes with help, and learn something and decide to try again (well, I haven't figured out the UCA bolt yet, but ... ).

I hope you can get it solved without a big to-do. Whatever odd thing happened to make the lid stick, a lot of us will learn something new from it.

It is a full, peach colored moon tonight. Perhaps we'll have some more anomalous problems reporting in tomorrow.

Or perhaps I'll get someone to suggest a small well placed brick of C4 as the solution.

You're definitely not the "forum idiot". My single crowning achievement where this car is concerned was parking it in an atypical place in the yard, warning everybody that I had done so and not to hit it, and then backing the ATV out myself late that night and hitting my own Mercedes with it.

Since you can't get around the whole filter lid to pry it off, I second the suggestion to hammer a screwdriver in under the lip at an angle, if you can get even that much lift on one side of it, from the side you CAN get to. I can't imagine how this problem developed in the first place, it doesn't make sense, but that might help you get it off.

Also... and this is a REALLY long shot - but if you can find two solid points under the hood somewhere to safely wedge a 2x4 or similar in where it won't break any connections or bend anything... and then wedge a bottle jack in there on top of that... and use something of an appropriate size and configuration that can slip under the thing... if it's REALLY stuck that tight, I would almost bet any odds that IF you could get a bottle jack wedged safely under there somehow and get something rigged up to lift up on the canister, the jack would have enough force to pry the thing open one way or another no matter what.

If you have an oxy-acetylene or propane torch, you could carefully... and I do mean carefully, being mindful of petroleum spills under there, as well as delicate electrical insulation, foam bits, wiring, vacuum lines, the whole nine yards... heat the edge of the canister lip to try to expand the canister lid away from whatever it's stuck to. We've made repairs like that on the farm successfully in the past, but I refuse to be responsible if you burn the car to the ground trying it. Definitely a last resort.

No kidding......some of the resident leftist loons may board busses bound for Wichita at first sunrise, after reading your eco-sins. Hide your cars behind your house just in case.

Seriously, they're the biggest bunch of do-nothings on the planet. "Caring," is all they're good at.

I'd take the housing off if it were me. You may have to replace it anyway. My guess is the center rod is jammed in lower part of filter, but how I have no idea. Please let us know any follow up. Thanks.

Tyler --- Did you sleep last night? Or were you tossing and turning thinking about the oil filter?

I have a question, though, about Trigger's issue: Is the filter "lid" squarely on? Are the screw studs in the center of holes? I've had one filter lid (or cover) that was very hard to get off. I had to use a rubber mallet on it to break the "seal".

I do like the comments of funola from above. And Jimmy's comments about your next car named Valdez --- oh, that would be a perfect name for a big 300SDL.

Good Luck and if you need some cheering or other words of encouragement, do give me a ring.

What about a slide hammer with a puller attached to the end?

I have removed the axles from my truck this way.

You could always remove the housing, put it on a bench or in a vice to work on it.

Tyler,

I found myself waking up this morning reflecting on your situation...and came to the same conclusion as last night...

Take the housing off! You are hacking at a piece of the engine which has bolts to be removed.

There will be a certain satisfaction in removing the cover, but, when you do that you will be left with a warped cover and possible damage to the housing anyways.

Hey Tyler:

I just took a look under my hood to get some perspective on your problem. I am thinking that either the housing or lid got slightly out of round. Do you have or can you borrow a bench clamp that you can lower over the lid so as to squeeze it back into round to relieve some pressure?

It's always the easy tasks. Just promise that you WONT use a torch, that seems like singularly poor advice, ditto for attacking it with a drill. At least while the oil filter assembly is still on the vehicle.

Perhaps all you need to do is pick a spot and chip or sand some paint off the body, and the lid will instantly disengage

This could be a great time to start a new thread -
'Who's got the biggest stain in their driveway?'

Good luck, I'm eagerly awaiting the "I finally got it" post

Not really, like daw said, I couldn't sleep well, and was up at 8:30 this morning. Just came in from taking a fresh crack at it, and I give up.

My indy is going to come to the house Monday, and if he can't get it, I'll have it towed to his shop.

My goal today is to get the driveway presentable again.
