That's still a great price, though... when you get it, let us know the part number & manufacturer!

Does anyone know how much air does the stock om602 fan flow? I guess it uses the same fan as the om603 (both of them metal).

It looks like non-benz parts on the fan blade ~$50 and clutch~$120 are MUCH cheaper buying the ACE stuff. The dealer whole sale price for the 606 version fan clutch is like $230 which is around the same price for the reatail price of my 1990 2.5 Turbo 300D. I wonder what it is that causes the big price disconnect.

However: That is not the proper temp sensor for your car. Only the 1986-1987 models use a temp switch for the electric fan (switch = on or off). Your 1990 model has a temp sensor for the fan (sensor = variable resistance based on temperature). I believe the temp sensor for your 124.128 chassis will be 008-542-45-17, but you may want to verify that (the number is stamped on the side of the housing in teeny tiny numbers). The 606.962 turbo plastic fan blade is p/n 606-200-01-23. |

I checked my clutches again:
My one car (with the 606 turbo clutch, 606-200-01-22) when engaged, stops immediately - I mean, in less than 1 second, it jerks to a screeching halt. When not engaged, though, it still stops darn quick - spins to a stop in about 2 seconds. The difference? When not engaged, you can rev the engine to 3000rpm and it's obvious the fan isn't turning that fast. When it is engaged, at 3000rpm the fan is deafening. I mean LOUD. What's interesting is that on my other cars (with the 606-200-00-22 clutch), it's not quite the same. When not engaged, they take 5-8 seconds to spin to a stop. But when engaged, they stop within 1-2 seconds... it's a much bigger difference between engaged & not engaged. Bottom line - if you're not sure if your clutch is engaged, try the "roar" test... get the engine hot and then with the hood up, rev the engine to 3000rpm. If the fan noise doesn't drown out the engine noise, the clutch isn't engaged. I really need to get some video of this! |

I spent the weekend and last night doing the 602 to 606 mod. It went well, I haven't been able to test it yet. I'm going to do a flush or two of the cooling system, and also need to trouble shoot my temp sensor to get the aux fans to come on. I posted alot of pics on my
2.5 over heat thread Here are a couple of pics, but go to the other thread to see all of them: 606 aftermarket fan and 602 stock fan side by side $9 harbor freight pully holder sure beats the $109 MB version!! New fan, fan clutch, waterpump, and belt all installed, now for the aux fan sensor troubleshooting... Next thing to figure out!

I was able to cancel the order for the wrong sensor. I still need to try and figure out how to trouble shoot the current one.

Successfully completed fan clutch mod!
Just to let you guys know, I recently purchased a new fan clutch for my 1992 W140SD with the 3.5L Turbo engine. The quote for the OM603 replacement clutch was $238.00, but for the OM606 fan clutch it was $119 at my local import parts store. It was a Meyle brand and bolted up exactly with the old bolts. It now works as it should.
This is some great info.
