oil consumption 300sd

I have a 93 300sd with 215,000 miles on the odometer.I recently took a trip, about 1900 miles, the car used 10qts of oil.Is it possible that the oil return line from the turbo to the oil pan is restricted causing the turbo to blow oil into the intake?I recently had the connecting pipe from the turbo to the intake off and there was an oily build-up inside it and the intake.I have not noticed an abnormal amount of smoke out the tailpipe and there are no major leaks under the hood or the car.The PO said he had a rebuilt turbo installed prior to selling the car,it looks more like used to me.Also is it possible to replace the rings without removing the engine from the car?Thought about rings, rod bearings, and valve seals, but don't want to pull the engine if we can get around it.

1 qt in 190 miles... you may not have seen smoke, but the drivers behind you certainly did! It could be a bad turbo (or restricted drain line). More likely than worn rings, IMO.

Ooops, you've been had. Classic symptom of the 3.5L rod bender. New short block will fix this problem. Better jimmy open that wallet.

You should consider a engine from a 300D or 300SDL from 1987 to 1989, slightly cheaper and no more bend rod...

More like 86-87. No 603 offered in the US in 88-89. 3.5 started in 90.

No way around it, your engine block is scrap metal.

from the sounds of things this is a common problem on these particular engines.what about a sleeve or two and some new rods?would this be a cheaper option?what causes this and is it a mileage related problem,or possibly the treatment of it?

This is not mileage or maintenance related. The engine basically self destruct from day one, the cylinder becomes oval shape and hence the oil consumption. MBZ re-bore the cylinder from 3.0L to 3.5L and they screwed up but never admitted it. I think MBZ replace it with a stronger rod and it helps.
