Jeep with strange shifting automatic from a 1982 300sd

OK, I have a week to work out some bugs (After my exam on Monday I have a week to work out issues and get to the field)

I got a 1982 300SD engine and tranny in my Jeep (http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?t=123204)

It goes through a NP205 divorced transfercase and then to two 4:09 gear axles (Turning 33 inch skinnys).

Problems:
-Shifts great when cold, but you have to lift off the accelerator.
-warms up and seems to stick in higher gears (hard to go uphill in forth at 15km/h) (and by hills I am talking 11% for 30km).
-you cannot manually shift it at all?

Solutions I am thinking:
-Change filter and fluid (tranny was fine in the car and came out as a unit)
-Check and fix the vacuum system
-It has electrical connections at the moment??? Should it?
-????????

In the second image, there is a cable right in the center of the image. At the top of the cable is a white adjustment nut on the top of the valve cover. Turn the adjustment nut to provide more slack (clockwise IIRC)..........about 1.5 turns.

Drive it again.

The only electrical connections would be for the part neutral switch, and the kickdown solenoid. Neith of which you should need in this application.

sweet- you're making some nice progress there. I just saw one of those cab forward jeeps for sale here in the metro-reminded me of your build.

they sure are cool looking....

ohh- good luck with your shifting issues- it is all about tweaking the bowden cable and the vac modulator.

I will adjust the cable (tomorrow after my exam).

Is it normal not to be able to manually over ride the gear?

Here are some finished photos from the field last year.

Thanks for the help

Cheers
David

My gut is telling me that the problem is not the cable. If it is not shifting correctly, it is most likely the vacuum management mess on top of the valve cover and the part that is on the back of the IP. What all this mess does is simulate the vacuum behavior of a gas engine.

Do you have access to the car that the engine came from? If so, it should have a vacuum diagram of this mechanism on the driver side core support.

Good luck,

I will take a close look at the vacuum system...Unfortunately the rusted out shell was parted out and crushed.

I know I have problems with vacuum system since I added power brakes and some of my 4x4 stuff needed vacuum. I will re-design where I took off the vacuum and restore the original setup.

Keep you posted thanks for the advise
