You saw that listing too? I figure he believed everything the guy who sold it to him said. The first MB 5-speed AT came out in 1990, long after the last 123 rolled off the German assembly line. Hopefully it's a 5-speed MT. That would be a sweet surprise.

definitely not a manual

Automatic for sure and they swear its a five speed. i saw the pics. the car looks pretty good though. small fender damage but nice int minus the dash which is cracked to hell. I may go see even though it may not be what they say.

IIRC the gate for a 722.5 has D-4-3-2. A 722.6 goes from N to D then you pull the lever left for 4-3-2. I suspect you'll the typical D-3-2.

Logically there is no five speed automatic that will just bolt up to a 123. All the guys that have gone to see a five speed manual as well in a 123. Then found out that the owner either called reverse one of the speeds or baited buyers.

At least there at least was a true five speed manual but pretty scarce and never sold with the north american versions of 123s.

I guess he revised the ad because there's no mention of 5-speed AT anymore.

Oh you people. Get with it. Four speeds forward and one reverse = 5 spd. Do I have to explain EVERYTHING?

PS: and I bet it gets 40 mpg too

I'd think a 722.5 would bolt up, you just need to worry about the control side.

I've heard that there are lots of 722.3 parts in a 722.5 - but did they have the same casings too? The starter bump on the good side for an OM617 would probably be the first problem wouldn't it?

Weren't all the 722.5s factory fitted to petrol engines?

... I think there would be a problem, bigger than the control side.
maybe someone out there can build a new intermediate plate so the starter can be on the other side... and then move the IP, so there would be room for it...
how's it done on the 602... starter is below the IP? Hmmm

Assuming everything else bolts up you can always chop a chunk out of the bellhousing for the starter and weld a new bump to cover it up.

You're right, I forgot about the generation difference between the 617 and newer 104 engines the 5 speed was fitted to.
