I put my AC on cold on the SDL and then hit recirculate. That way its only cooling air that is already in the cabin with minimal outside air being cooled. The air here in FL is hot and humid so the cooling system doesnt work that well with it.

But today the SDL says its 99F out and I put it on recirc at full blast It is nice and coooooool

Geeezz Guys- five days and four pages of technical jargon and jabber later. All Hip001 wanted to know was how to have colder AC in his car.
There is a simple answer to cold AC in FLA, or Texas or New Mexico, which many of you won't like, and that is to unconvert the system - go back to R12. We've had both our diesels since new and in the begining they both blew very cold AC. In a moment of polical correctness, my wife had her SD converted - on the other hand, Elvira, has never been converted and twenty five years later the AC is still cold and is much colder than the converted SD.
So, to quote the immortal Daryl Royal: Dance with who brung you.

123Guy, so what do you want us to do.... ? Let our keyboards rust up just because we already covered the subject ?

Lets talk about your wife.....

So while you were married to her.... she had the SD converted ?
Tell us about the conversation which happened when you heard that ...
Are there any pictures of your face when you found that out ?

I have a question regarding ac that doesn't warrant a new thread. I'm about to take an 8-hour trip and I'd like ac. I got it recharged last summer with r134a (my car's retrofitted) but it didn't seem to hold til this summer, but worked all through last summer. It looks cheap enough to recharge it myself, but I heard of issues with handling the refrigerant. Do you need to be certified? Can I easily skirt that law? Is it sold in stores? I do not have a vacuum pump, either.

R134a is sold without any certificate to anyone at most stores including wal-mart. If you don't know what you are doing though you can end up hurting yourself, so, it might be worth spending a few dollars and letting a pro recharge it for you - most shops will do it for under $100. You could probably do it yourself for about $30 including buying a hose to connect to your system. If yours is leaking you probably want to add at least one can which has oil too.

If your system still has any R134a in it at all you do not have to evacuate it so you don't need a pump. Does the compressor still run at all when you turn on the A/C? If so it probably still has some in it. A shop with a gauge can tell you quickly if the system is completely depleted or not. If it is completely gone then I would suggest you have them find the leak before recharging. Good luck.

Walmart, sells 134a no licence needed for just a refill at least here in Virginia. Caution some of walmarts 134a has stop leak in it, so read the label carefully. I goofed and plugged up the system on my Dodge truck. Now need to flush and start over......

Next summer is when I'm going to get this all up and running. It's too cost prohibitive right now and with the cool summer I don't think it's a needed repair.

I recommend to anyone with a retrofit to go back to r12. It's so much better and the certification is easy to get. Seriously an online open book tests! Just ctrl+f every question!

Cool Summer?! Where the heck do you live? We've had a break from the heat and much needed rain for the last week or so, but before that we had a solid month of triple digit or VERY NEAR triple digit highs. Global warming you know.

This is great! I've never laughed so hard!

So if I read all this correctly I can:
tint the windows
park in the shade
drive at night
only drive in the winter
move somewhere cooler
clean cooling condensor and radiator fins
install a upgrade condensor
buy another car to drive in the summer

or convert back to R12

Did I get this right?

okyoureabeast, WOW is all I can say! I did not expect a ozone lesson but was impressed with the information! Thank you!

Hip001,
No , you did not get it right....
the fins on the evaporator and the condensor and the radiator need to be cleaned and if needed straightened no matter what else is done...

This is not an alternative to R12 .... but with both you may be surprised at how well these old cars can perform.
