So if I read all this correctly I can:
tint the windows
park in the shade
drive at night
only drive in the winter
move somewhere cooler
clean cooling condensor and radiator fins
install a upgrade condensor
buy another car to drive in the summer

or convert back to R12

Did I get this right?

okyoureabeast, WOW is all I can say! I did not expect a ozone lesson but was impressed with the information! Thank you!
Sounds like you're a quick study. You got the message.

This thread is just going on and on and on and on.....

Settle it once and for all. Trade in your car with the clunkers for cash on a Chrysler. You will get $4500 for your hot old Benz, and Chrysler will give you $4500 more as a discount off the price of the car. So... $9000 off the list price, fill out 50 pages of paperwork, your old wasteful Benz goes to the crusher, and you will have a new car that was designed to use R134A.

So then you will be nice and cool driving around in a piece of garbage, that has been subsidized by the US Government through our tax money. Sounds great huh????

NOT!!!!!!!

We must keep America free and we must have the right to purchase and drive any car that we want and that we can afford, and the Government should keep their nose out every single bit of our daily lives.

How is that for rant?

This should keep this thread going for a while

Thumbs up

What's so difficult people about staying R12, the system was designed for it and it costs chump change more per pound than 134A or the replacements. If you're trying to save $50-100 on the refrigerant, there are other ways to do this. Hell you can get enough to fill your system for sub $100 shipped. Pack a lunch and bring to work for a month to save it up if need be.

Of course tint helps keep the heat out and also protects your interior. Also use one of those silver reflector jobbers if you have to park in a lot. I use them in the front AND rear glass... they're $5 only and it's worth the extra effort for the rear.

If you don't have the '85+ style condenser, get one. They're around if you spend a bit of time looking. I know where a few are in the yards is someone wants to sweet talk me.

Also late 617s have different pulley/fan setups too. Upgrade to this.

Lastly, upgrade to the late style large A/C condenser fan, this moves more air at low speeds... just what you want. Hell, '89+ cars had dual aux fans for even more flow if you feel like going that route!

Do not complain until you've made the car the best it can be with the OE parts. Cleaned condenser and properly working system parts go without saying. I have no issues cooling my cars in the extreme heat/humidity here.

The car wouldn't qualify for "Cash for Clunkers".

Want to stay cooler in summer? Wear a t-shirt made of cotton or linen. Avoid polyester. Drink plenty of water.

That is all I have to contribute.

Yes, although I am not saying it is easy....Sometimes hard things become necessary....
but think about how seldom these get cleaned....
people do all the other stuff over the years...
then someone does all the right stuff and it does not really cool the car..
the dust, dog hairs, smoke film , etc have built up to where a perfect rest of the system will still not cut it...

DMorrison has a great thread about cleaning it...

You are absolutely correct.

By the way, did you hear that they have to send these clunkers to be crushed? and that the dealers are supposed to drain the oil out of them when they get them and fill the engine with water and something else, and then idle them till they seize so that they are totally disabled? They can not go to the U-Pull-It places. Off to the crusher!!!

It's ironic that the Government can't figure out how to handle the demand of a $1 billion dollar project but they want to take care of all of our Healthcare????

It's real ironic how they can't even run a $400 million/year military force. Oh wait, just two problems with that one.

Other than pesky facts like that, it makes a great sound bite.

Hehe well if you look at my "location" it says Northeast PA which is oddly in Northwestern pennsylvania near Erie. It's been really rainy and cool. It feels a lot like central england

They drain the oil and fill with sodium silicate (water glass). Run till engine siezes. When it cools, nothing that came in contact with the silicate will be usable.

DMorrison has a great thread about cleaning it...
DMorrison's thread was actually on replacing the evaporator but the same steps seem necessary to clean it. I wonder if this would work by dropping the blower assembly and threading in the cleaning tube. Looks like this one does not require rinsing.

I think I'll give it a try.
