‘99 E300TD…Removing Spin-on Fuel filter

Looks pretty tight to remove spin-on, to get it up and out of the space immediately adjacent to the filter bracket. Looks like will definitely need to squeeze in upper radiator hose to gain enough space to remove it? Will appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks
Bill

You can remove it by simply pushing the radiator hose out of the way (assuming it is cold and soft). I usually slip the new one into position empty, then fill it while it is in position so it doesn't spill when tilting it between the hose and the mounting bracket.

On my 300D, I removed the little bracket that holds the brake booster vacuum line first. It is held in my two small bolts.

Then I moved the vacuum line out of the way before lifting the fuel filter out of the way. I spilled a lot of fuel. Next time I will suction some of the fuel out of the filter first to reduce spillage.

Set the filter in position empty. Then use a small funnel to pour fuel (I used kerosene) into the filter before tightening.

It might be possible to fill the spin-on filter through the pre-filter hole. Simply pull the pre-filter, place a funnel in the hole and fill it that way. I've never tried this so it's just a theory.

I fill mine on the bench, pull the rad hose out of the way and slip it in place pre-filled. Never been a prob spilling for me. Perhaps different engine bays fit together slightly differently.
